Making Soap With Ivory Soap Dough – A Kid Friendly Thing To Do

This is THE favorite craft and the most fun to give as gifts!!!!! We call it Soap Dough!

I discovered it when I was teaching a unit on Colonial America, and wanted to have a hands-on lesson making soap. The kids loved it, and my kids still can’t get enough of it. To promote my web site – I took the soap dough to a fair, and made it with kids ( With apple cider doughnuts just next to me – most people passed right by me! Oh well) . I even started selling soap dough kits, with pressed dough, cookie cutters, and everything you need to make 2 soaps for parties, plus extra colors to decorate your fun shapes! I take soap dough it into my kid’s classrooms, and teach the little kids how to make their shapes. It’s an awesome craft! Over the past year, I’ve discovered some techniques that make it easier for little fingers. Using my teaching background, and having 4 little ones of my own-ages 2 to 9, I have tried to come up with steps to making soap shapes an extra fun and enjoyable experience for you and kids!:0)

Here are some ideas for you to try: Have Fun! I know you will!

This is how I make my “soap dough” –

I have found that if you cut the bar, while it’s still in the wrapper – it’s easier to get out of the wrapper

I use the cheese grater blade on my Cuisinart

I just add the Ivory Soap Bars directly into the Cuisinart, and shred it like cheese:)
**Unless you’re trying for a practical joke – Be careful – if you leave it out on the counter! It really looks “JUST LIKE CHEESE”

Then, I add a couple of Tb. of water. – Only enough to make it doughy (like pie crust)- not bubbly

Then, I add color – This is my favorite color company – It makes the best soap colors!

Use wax paper as a table mat – The soap lifts right off of it!

**This is a great tip – I just thought of this one, last month – after I made soaps with a pre-school class!

I USED to have the kids press the dough into the cookie cutter, but now I do this…

Tools you’ll need –

  • Different sizes of straws!
  • A sharpened pencil – or – small tipped tool similar to a pencil

Once you have your shape out of the cookie cutter, and onto a clean piece of wax paper, find a place that you want to put round shapes, like eyes or buttons:

Using Eyes as an example:

Using the size straw you like – push the straw into the soap – soap will be extracted into the straw!

Push the soap out of the straw, onto the wax paper, and put your straw over the spot for the second eye & repeat!

Using the other end of the straw – and the SAME technique – Extract the black soap for eyes

(I can’t find my pic. of the kids pushing the soap out of the straw & I have to get the kids to Bible Camp – I’ll try to find it, today. Sorry!)

Squeeze the soap out of the straw, by pushing it up and out – like an “Ice Pop”! – Use this to put into your eye socket!

Use this same technique to make different size holes for different shapes on your soap.

& Use the pencil to add different details, like the lightening bolt on the skull.

These are some of the soaps we did at Christmas time! One mom, wrote to me, and asked me to put together kits for all of her kids classrooms – 6o kids total! We put together a snowman and gingerbread man kit (120 shapes)! She took the soaps to 3 different classrooms for a fun Holiday Party Craft! So fun! 🙂
