How do you make a dump cake?

  1. As a fruit base – Use 2 containers of fruit filling (about the size of a pie filling can)  – this can be applesauce, pie filling, canned fruit with juices, canned fruit with syrup, etc…
  2. Then add yellow cake mix to the top of your fruit – you may need to spread it out
  3. Add melted butter
  4. Additional toppings can be nuts, shredded coconut, crumble topping, or more fruit
  5. Bake and enjoy

Cherry Pineapple Dump Cake – an easy dessert for dinner and potlucks

  • Cook Time: 25 minutes
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 10-12 servings 1x


  • 1 can of cherry pie filling
  • 1 can of crushed pineapple
  • 1 box of yellow cake
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter – melted
  • optional toppings…
  • 1 cup of shredded coconut
  • 1/2  cup of pecan pieces


  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Pour the cherry filling into the pan – spread out if needed
  • Next, dump the crushed pineapple – again, spread if needed
  • Sprinkle the yellow cake
  • Pour the melted butter over the cake mix
  • Add coconut shavings and pecan pieces to the top
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes
  • Serve with whipped cream


Store leftovers  covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days
