Make-Ahead and Storage:

These Christmas Rice Krispies Treats are best when made at least one hour in advance. The marshmallow will need time to cool before you can decorate them with white icing. Everything, except for the icing can be prepared right away.

When storing your rice-Krispies treats you should store them covered and at room temperature. They should keep for up to 3 days that way.

Santa Hat Rice Krispies Treats Ingredients:

  • Rice Krispies Cereal
  • marshmallows – you can use mini or regular sized marshmallows, but the recipe should be adjusted for both
  • butter – unsalted butter
  • red food coloring – I used liquid, but gel works perfectly fine
  • white icing – I’ve used cream cheese frosting in the past, but this time I went with a bright white

Equipment Needed for these Christmas Treats:

  • saucepan
  • stovetop
  • silicone spatula
  • mixing bowl
  • measuring cups
  • 2 (9 inches) round cake pans
  • wax paper
  • knife
  • piping bag with a star tip attached

How to Make Santa Hat Christmas Rice Krispies Treats

  • melt the butter in a saucepan – over medium heat
  • add the marshmallows and stir in until melted
  • remove from heat
  • add food coloring until you achieve your desired color
  • in a mixing bowl, pour the food coloring over the cereal
  • transfer to 2 round wax paper-lined cake pans (you really only need to set a square of wax paper over the cake pans and let the weight of the marshmallow cereal pull it down)
  • mash the cereal down until it’s pretty level
  • let cool for at least 30 minutes – up to an hour
  • remove the wax paper from the pan and push the paper down
  • cut into 8 equal pieces
  • fill your piping bag with white icing and decorate the brim with 4-5 stars going across and the tip of the hat with 1 star

Tips and Tricks for making these Santa Hat Christmas Rice Krispies Treats

  • use fresh marshmallows, not ones from a bag that has been opened for a long period of time
  • don’t forget to make sure your butter is unsalted
  • you don’t need to perfectly line the cake pans. Just place a square of wax paper over the cake pan that is slightly larger than the pan
  • allowing the rice Krispies to cool is important. If the marshmallow is too warm, it might pull apart. Even though frosting does not weigh very much at all, the weight of the star decorations might pull your treat apart (believe me from experience – I am so impatient. I waited for 10-15 minutes maximum and some of my hats needed a patch job)

Santa hat Rice Krispies Treat
If you’ve been too impatient like I was and you decorated the treats while they are warm and gooey, you might see separation at the bottom of your Santa hat. You wouldn’t think that a little bit of frosting would weigh it down, but it does. Just cut that edge off, and wait a little longer until it’s set (the marshmallow has cooled enough so it’s firmer) and decorate again.

Storing:
Store at room temperature in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.
