- 8 small apples - like Macintosh or gala - I tried to find squatty round shapes, not tall and slender
- 1 12 oz. Chocolate Melts yellow
- 16 candy eyes Candy Eyes - large ones make the cutest chickens
- 4 candy melt chips - orange
- 2 cups coconut flakes
- 3 drops food coloring - brown is preferred but yellow also works *you'll most likely have to order brown coloring as that is not a common color
*wax should be removed from apples before dipping into the chocolate. Refer to the notes below
color the coconut with a little bit of the brown or yellow food coloring - (a little goes a long way) - mix it together with a fork
Set coconut aside
Set your candy eyes out
Using a serrated knife, cut the orange candy melts into pie-shaped pieces - you'll get about 4-6 triangles from each circle
*cut into quarters and if you can, cut those in half
Melt the chocolate in a glass bowl using the microwave method detailed in the recipe printable
Set wax paper out for the apples to dry on
Remove the stem from the apples
Insert a dowel into the apple you are ready to dip
Dipping:
Tilting your bowl to get make a deep section of chocolate, roll each apple in the chocolate, coating it with yellow chocolate
Dip the apple immediately into the coconut, coating the bottom
Set the apples onto the wax paper
Let the chocolate cool off on each one as you repeat the steps above for each remaining apples
Decorating the apples:
Use a toothpick or another utensil to dip into the leftover melted chocolate. You will use this melted chocolate to glue the eyes and orange triangles you cut from the orange candy melts
*NOW – in order to get the cutest beaks, I learned that the curved part of the orange chocolate melt (the top) should face the apple with the flat (bottom) of the orange beak facing out
If you want to use the yellow straws, take the dowels out and replace them with straws
*Best if eaten within the day

- You can rinse them in hot water that is hot enough to melt the wax and rub them dry with a coarse towel
- Another way is to boil them for 10 seconds and then dry them with a towel
