Catch The Snowflake Gift Hunt Christmas Game

A fun Christmas game for kids to play at a Christmas party
Prep Time30 minutes
Active Time15 minutes
Total Time45 minutes
Yield: 1 game
Author: Melissa Haines
Cost: $15

Materials

  • White Balloons to represent snowflakes
  • Card stock and a marker You can use printer paper as a substitute
  • A paper gift bag filled with inexpensive presents for each child with "NO NAME" on the presents
  • A big bag like an extra large garbage bag to stuff all of the white balloons into You can find extra large garbage bags at most hardware stores

Instructions

  • You'll need to cut the card stock into 1"x2" rectangles - basically small enough to fold up, and stick into a balloon, but large enough to write a number on
  • Add numbers to each piece of paper - counting up as you go - making sure each child attending the party will have a different number.
  • Fold the individual numbered papers, and place each folded number inside a different deflated balloon.
  • Blow the balloon up and tie them shut. The numbered paper should now be inside the balloon.
  • Number the gift bags by counting and ending at the same number you did for the numbered pieces of paper
  • Stuff a large bag with all of your balloons
  • Hide the numbered gifts around the party room

Playing the Game

  • There are several ways to distribute the balloons, but I'll start with this (most orderly - for a school party). More ideas can be found below
  • Grab the bag of balloons and ask the kids to sit in a circle with you in a chair among them
  • Pass the bag to the kids. Tell the kids as the bag comes to them, they should take out a "snowflake" - balloon, and hold it in their lap until everyone has a balloon
  • When everyone has a balloon, let them know that they will need to pop the balloon to find the hidden paper inside.
  • The kids can pop their balloons by putting them underneath them and wiggling or bouncing on them to get their paper inside. This should be fun to watch
  • Once everyone has their paper, have them look at the number and hold onto it
  • When everyone has their number, the kids can go on a gift hunt to find the present that matches the number on their paper and open it up to see the fun prizes inside!

Other Ideas for Distributing Balloons

  • If it's at your home or private area that happens to have a balcony - let the kids stand under the balcony to catch a snowflake as you drop them down. Then, follow the steps above.
  • If Santa is at the party, let Santa distribute the balloons by calling each child by name and handing them their balloon
  • Ask some adults to help toss balloons into the air for kids to catch one

Scavenger Hunt Variation

  • Write a clue on the paper that you place inside the balloon. This clue should lead them to a place that has another clue written down.
  • Add more clues and places to find ending at a spot that has gift bags for the kids to find and open
