Equipment

  • Scissors
  • 2-inch circle punch (optional)
  • White paint pen or marker (optional)

Materials

  • 1 printable gingerbread man template
  • 1 sheet brown or white cardstock
  • 1 student photograph
  • 1 printable red or green paper bow
  • 2 –3 buttons or round stickers
  • Glue

Instructions

Print the template

  • Print the gingerbread man template onto brown cardstock, or use white cardstock if children want to color their own gingerbread people.

Cut out the gingerbread person.

  • Carefully cut around the outline of the gingerbread man.

Add the photograph

  • Cut a student photograph into a 2-inch circle and glue it onto the gingerbread person's head. Alternatively, children can draw their own faces.

Attach the bow.

  • Cut out a red or green paper bow from the printable. Glue it at the neck or on the side of the gingerbread person's head.

Decorate the gingerbread person.

  • Add buttons, stickers, or painted dots down the front. Use a white paint pen or marker to draw icing details along the arms and legs, if desired.

Display the finished craft.

  • Let the glue dry, then add the gingerbread person to your Christmas classroom bulletin board.

Notes

  • Template size: I tested approximately 4 × 6-inch and 5 × 7-inch gingerbread outlines. The larger size is my favorite for bulletin boards.
  • Photo size: A 2-inch circle fits nicely inside the larger gingerbread head.
  • Printing tip: Brown cardstock creates a traditional gingerbread look. White cardstock allows children to color their own.
  • Easy decorating: Round stickers or dot markers are alternatives to real buttons.
  • Safety: Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Small buttons can be a choking hazard for younger children.
