Equipment

  • Lollipop sticks or wooden skewers
  • A Beach Shovel for scooping
  • Star cookie cutter for starfish (about 2-inches wide) Optional
  • sharp knife for carving
  • large spoon
  • large bowl
  • cutting board

Materials

  • `1 oval seedless watermelon that can stand on its end
  • 1 cantaloupe
  • 1 bunch seedless grapes
  • 1 honeydew
  • 18 oz. blueberries
  • 1 cup graham crackers crushed for sand - Optional

Instructions

  • Cut a small portion off of the top of the watermelon, cutting as evenly as you can (about 3 inches down from the top)
  • Scoop out the watermelon, cut it into cubes, and put them into a large bowl
  • Cut up your other fruit and toss it with the watermelon cubes
  • Using the top of the watermelon, cut about a 2-inch slice ring off of the bottom of the watermelon top
  • Cut about 1/3 of that watermelon ring off so it resembles a U
  • Use a knife to cut any of the watermelon away from the U shaped green rind
  • Now you have a handle
  • Using a sharp knife, puncture holes on either end of your watermelon handle
  • Line the handle up with the top of the watermelon, in the place you think it looks best, and puncture holes where the ones on the handle line up
  • Cut your lollipop stick in half, so it's about 3 inches long, and insert it through the holes you've made - attaching the handle
  • Fill the watermelon with the cut-up fruit and other fresh fruit
  • Insert your shovel for serving

Optional:

  • If you want, cut some star fish out by using a small star cookie cutter and fruit
  • You can also sprinkle some fake sand around the serving tray - crushed graham crackers

Notes

Storage - watermelon is very perishable once cut into. I would make this the day of your party or event, cover, and store it in the refrigerator until ready
Strawberries - They get soggy quickly. Add your sliced strawberries right before serving and toss in
