Equipment

Materials

  • 3 large green tomatoes - sliced into 1/4 inch - 1/2 inch slices
  • 1 cup flour - all-purpose
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp. cayenne
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup bread crumbs garlic seasoned
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ cup oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Get your oil heated up enough to fry the tomatoes (Med-High heat). Oil should be around 375 degrees for best frying

Start an assembly line

  • In one bowl, mix the flour with garlic powder, cayenne, and black pepper
  • In another bowl mix buttermilk and egg
  • Fill another bowl with garlic bread crumbs. cornmeal and salt - mix with a fork or whisk to blend together
  • One at a time, coat tomatoes on each side with flour
  • Dip the tomatoes into the egg, then into the cornmeal mixture
  • Place them onto a parchment lined baking sheet
  • Test the oil with a little piece of batter from a coated tomato - if it sizzles, it's most-likely ready to fry
  • Using tongs or a fork, place tomatoes into the frying pan filled with oil
  • Turn them once the bottoms have turned golden. Let both sides turn golden.
  • Drain on a paper towel
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste
  • Serving Option - Ranch Dressing
