Baking Powder Substitute
You can easily make your own baking powder with baking soda and cream of tartar—a simple substitute when you run out.
Last week, I found myself with some extremely old-looking baking powder. I would have to get a chisel out to the hard, crusted powder. So, instead of trusting that this expired baking powder would do its job, I researched a substitute.
That’s when I found out that you can use baking soda and cream of tartar in place of baking powder.
Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Baking Powder
- baking soda
- cream of tartar
Here’s how to make baking powder:
Use two parts baking soda and one part cream of tartar as a substitute for baking powder.
- ⅓ teaspoon baking soda plus ⅔ teaspoon cream of tartar equals one teaspoon of baking powder
- ⅔ teaspoon baking soda plus one ⅓ teaspoon cream of tartar equals two teaspoons baking powder
- One teaspoon baking soda plus two teaspoons cream of tartar equals one tablespoon baking powder
