You can easily make your own baking powder with baking soda and cream of tartar—a simple substitute when you run out.

Last week, I found myself with some extremely old-looking baking powder. I would have to get a chisel out to the hard, crusted powder. So, instead of trusting that this expired baking powder would do its job, I researched a substitute.

That’s when I found out that you can use baking soda and cream of tartar in place of baking powder.

Here’s how to make baking powder:

Use two parts baking soda and one part cream of tartar as a substitute for baking powder.
