Olaf – Frozen Food-Themed Idea

He is so stinking cute! I can’t wait to see the movie this month.

Frozen Themed Food Idea

Because Jello takes a little time to set up…The jello portion will need to be prepared in advance. Jello, even though solid, it will still transfer moisture to your decorations. I suggest serving this treat within a few minutes – to about 30 minutes of adding the marshmallow and frosting Olaf, but…Olaf (with some adaptions) can partially be made ahead of time.

Expert Tips for Making Olaf in Advance

Here are my tips if you want to prepare this Olaf Floating in a Pool of Jello ahead of time –

  • You can easily make the jello cups the day before and store them covered in the fridge but do not add marshmallows until it is close to party time
  • *Note- If stored overnight with marshmallows on top, the marshmallows will take on some water and be a bit soggy on the bottom. If it is only an hour or so before the party, the marshmallows shouldn’t take on very little to only trace amounts of water.

Decorating – My advice would be to wait on adding frosting to Jell-O until right before your party

  • Hold off on the frosting arms that sit right on top of the Jello until you are ready to serve – the water in the Jello will interact with the frosting (his stick arms will melt into a puddle)

You don’t need to worry too much about the particulars – like possible soggy marshmallows. This adorable Olaf will steal the show. If your kids are anything like mine, they’ll go crazy over how cute Olaf is and dig into all of that blue Jello underneath Olaf.

Equipment

  • Summer themed straws or party drink umbrellas
  • I used individual glass bowls for individual pools they are 4 inches across the top and they hold 4 oz. of liquid – you could use small plastic clear bowls or small clear cups – keep in mind that Olaf is about 3 inches from top to bottom, so your jello surface needs to be at least that

Ingredients

  • 3 Regular sized marshmallows
  • 12 Mini marshmallows
  • 3 oz. Blue Jello
  • 7 oz. Brown icing in tube (or pastry bag) with a round writing tip It was near Halloween time when I was lucky enough to  find black and orange icing tubes in the baking aisle of Walmart – and I  used chocolate frosting for the brown – placed in a piping bag with a writing tip
  • 7 oz. Black icing in a tube (or pastry bag) with a round writing tip
  • 1 oz. Orange Icing in tube (or pastry bag) with round riting tip

Instructions

Jello:

  • I just followed the directions on the back of the Gelatin box which was to (in a small bowl) add 1 cup of hot water to the jello powder and let it dissolve, then add 1 cup of cold water
  • Pour the warm jello – evenly, into 4 separate serving bowls
  • Place those in the refrigerator to let the jello solidify

Making Olaf:

  • Once the jello had set up, you can get to work on making Olaf
  • You'll need a regular sized marshmallow

  • Cut it into 3 pieces
  • One piece is for the head, and one for his bum – that one is turned sideways

  • Mini marshmallows are used for the middle portion of Olaf (his waist), and feet
  • Now you can decorate with frosting –  use black for buttons, eyes, and mouth, some orange frosting for the carrot nose, and brown frosting for the hair, eyebrows, and arms

  • You'll use a small round writing tip for all of the frosting needed, or if you are lucky enough to find icing in tubes with writing tips already – those should work too
  • To add a special touch, decorate Jello treat with fun summer umbrellas

Notes

You can use frosting or icing for decorating purposes
Making this Ahead of Time:
  • As I stated in the post… you can make the Jell-O  ahead, but I would hold off decorating with marshmallows and frosting until shortly before serving. If you add marshmallows to Jell-O they will absorb some water from the Jell-O. If you add them too early, they may get mushy.
  • Just like the marshmallows, frosting and/or icing will also absorb water. The frosting will eventually dissolve and turn into a puddle
Storing Olaf – This dessert is best served right away, but if you need to store him – cover the individual cups or bowls with clear wrap and store them in the refrigerator for up to one day.
For reference
Olaf when completed is about 3 inches from the top to the bottom

Love this! I don’t have kids and will probably never see Frozen, but this is about the cutest winter treat I’ve ever seen. I think it would also be cute with a couple of Olafs in a square “swimming pool” dish on a buffet table.

Thank you so much for leaving this comment! I love your idea. Even if you don’t have kids, I highly recommend the movie. We actually just saw the second one this weekend. Happy Holidays!

Can’t access a video. No link or way to access it. Also, don’t understand cutting marshmallow into 3. I only see 2 large pieces of marshmallow (the head and the bottom). Where does the 3rd piece go? It looks like mini marshmallows are used for the middle and the feet. Please explain. Thanks.

    1. Melissa

Hi Sandy. The video is in the post – just above the printable recipe. You might have to wait a few seconds for an advertisement to finish before it will play. You won’t use the third piece. Cutting the marshmallow into thirds gave me just the right width and the look I was going for with the snow body. If you don’t want to waste the third piece, you can cut it into 2 pieces. I actually did just that in another Olaf dessert. This one is after the second Frozen movie and shows him in the pile of leaves. His belly is bigger and it looks kind of cute that way.
