Pinterest! I love Pinterest! Pinterest is a paperless magazine of ideas. As my youngest daughter’s birthday advanced, I pinned every Minnie Mouse birthday idea that I saw on Pinterest. These Minnie Mouse inspired cupcakes seemed easy enough. And, I knew that if I could pull it off, these cupcakes would steal the show. They are not your typical Minnie Mouse colors. The birthday girl requested blue frosting. Who am I to argue with the birthday girl?!
- The ears and bow are made from homemade fondant. Fondant does not have the best reputation for being very tasty. I’ve heard that home-made versions are a far bigger hit with taste buds. And, with each color of fondant costing a whopping $10, I thought I would save some funds by making my own. This is where I found the recipe!

- After I colored most of my fondant pink, and about 1/4 of it black. I got to work on the bows.
- I grabbed a sheet of wax paper and grabbed a small amount of the pink fondant.
- I stretched my piece of fondant into an oblong shape and plopped it down on the wax paper
- I took another sheet of wax paper and placed it over my oblong pink fondant.
- Then I used a rolling pin to flatten the piece into a rectangular shape – My favorite bows were from rectangles about 1&1/2 inches by 5 inches.
- I folded each end of the rectangle into the center so they met in the middle
- Then I pinched the center to give it the bow look
- I then used a small strip of fondant to wrap around the center meeting in the back of the bow
- I placed each bow onto the center of a frosted cupcake
- The ears were made by rolling up a small ball of black fondant and setting it on a clean sheet of wax paper
- I then topped that with another clean sheet of wax paper and pushed it down.
- That’s it! The ears are pretty simple
- I took the ears and placed them in the back of the bow, pushing the bottom of the ears into the bow and pinching them together to give them support
- That was it.
- I placed the cupcakes in an airtight container and transported them to the birthday location. They all held together.
- Thankfully, Martha Stewart was not around to critique these imperfect Minnie Mouse cupcakes. The little five and six-year-old girls, moms, and staff at the pottery place, however, were amazed and so impressed
