Do You Have to Soak Split Peas Before Cooking with Them?

  • It is not necessary to pre-soak split peas before cooking with them. If you do soak the peas, the cooking time will be cut down. Pre-Soaked peas take about 40 minutes to cook and Non-Soaked peas will cook for about 1 hour before turning soft

How Do You Make Split Pea Soup from Scratch?

  1. Cook onion and carrots in oil until tender
  2. Add garlic and continue to cook for an additional minute or until fragrant
  3. Add broth, thyme, ham bone, bay leaves and peas
  4. Bring to a boil
  5. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for about 1 hour or until peas are soft
  6. Remove the ham bone
  7. Pull ham off of bone and return it to the soup
  8. Remove bay leaves

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1 cup baby carrots – whole
  • 2 cloves garlic chopped
  • 7 cups beef broth chicken broth
  • 1 tsp. thyme
  • 1 lb. split peas rinsed, and checked for any stray debris
  • 1 ham bone with plenty of ham stuck to the sides
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large pot over medium heat…
  • Pour in the oil
  • Add the carrots, and onions
  • Cook for about 5 minutes, allowing the vegetables to become somewhat tender
  • Add the garlic, and continue to cook for about 1 minute longer
  • Add the broth, thyme, ham bone, peas, and bay leaves
  • Bring to a boil
  • Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 1 hour, or until peas are soft
  • Remove the ham – transfer it to a cutting board, and pull off pieces of ham
  • Place those in the soup
  • Remove the bay leaves
  • Season with salt, and pepper

Notes

  • Serve Suggestion: Serve with warm bread, and butter
You can substitute ham steak for ham bone…
*This time I did not have leftover ham, so I used ham steaks instead and cubed the ham before adding it to the soup
