Cut an upside down U for the mouth

  • Pull that piece away from the watermelon
  • Keeping the U shaped rind intact – Cut the watermelon from the rind, and chop it up
  • Place the chopped up watermelon in a large bowl
  • Save the rind from the cut out piece – You’ll need it for the fin
  • Cut teeth around the edges of the watermelon’s upside down “U” for the shark’s  mouth

  • Scoop out the watermelon from the inside of the shark’s mouth, cube it and place it in your watermelon bowl
  • Use the rind that you saved to shape like a shark fin
  • I cut the bottom of the fin at a slight angle to match the curve of the watermelon – you’ll probably want to do some adjusting to the angle as you try to place it on the watermelon. I fussed with mine so much that my toothpicks started to break. Then, I realized the kids could care less, and I moved on with my life
  • Use a toothpick, or 2 to insert the fin onto the shark
  • Use toothpicks to add grapes for eyes
  • Cut your cantaloupe, and other fruit you’ve chosen
  • Add it to the large bowl of watermelon

  • Now…place the hollowed out shark onto your serving platter, and scoop fruit salad out of the large bowl into the shark’s mouth
  • If you want – carefully cut some of the rind away from the shark teeth
  • There were a lot of teeth on my shark – a daunting task that I did not have the energy or patience for.  I only did it to the top 12 or so – It’s enough

This is an old picture from a few summers ago, and I didn’t even cut the rind off of the teeth. I couldn’t tear him away from the shark to take a picture. It’s definitely a hit with the boys in my life

  • Cover, and refrigerate until ready to serve!
  • *Hide from kids until you’re ready to serve, or (if they are like my kids) the fruit salad will disappear before company arrives!
