Lightning Bug Craft for Preschool

Some of my favorite childhood memories happened on warm summer evenings, running through the yard and trying to catch lightning bugs before they disappeared into the night. Now, as a mom of four, I love sharing those same simple summer traditions through crafts that children can make and parents will treasure.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that thumbprint crafts often become keepsakes without anyone planning for them. Those tiny thumbprints won’t stay tiny forever, and it’s fun to look back years later and remember just how small they once were. That’s one reason I love this Lightning Bug Craft. It captures the magic of summer while creating a sweet keepsake families can enjoy long after the fireflies disappear.

Whether you’re planning a preschool activity, homeschool lesson, summer camp craft, or a fun afternoon at home, this printable is an easy way to turn simple yellow thumbprints into glowing lightning bugs.

Thumbprint Lightning Bug Craft

One of my favorite things about this project is that it’s more than just a summer craftโ€”it becomes a keepsake.

Each child’s thumbprint is completely unique, making every jar one of a kind. Parents and grandparents will love looking back at those tiny thumbprints for years to come.

Summer Craft for Older Kids and Preschoolers

This craft works well for a wide range of ages.

Older children can usually draw the wings, head, and antennae on their own after the paint dries.

Preschoolers love making the thumbprints and decorating the jar, but they may need a little help with the marker details. Teachers or parents can draw the wings and head, or younger children can simply add antennae and let their imaginations do the rest.

No matter the age, every finished jar turns out a little differentโ€”and that’s part of what makes this craft so special.

Classroom Tips

Making this activity with a group?

These tips make things easier:

  • Print the templates before class.
  • Pour paint onto paper plates.
  • Keep baby wipes nearby.
  • Let the thumbprints dry before adding details.
  • Help younger children draw the lightning bugs.
  • Older students can complete the marker details independently.

FAQ

What paper works best?

Cardstock works best because it holds the paint without wrinkling.

Is this a good preschool craft?

Yes! Preschoolers enjoy making thumbprints. Because drawing the lightning bugs requires a little more control, an adult may want to help with the wings and head.

What kind of paint should I use?

Washable tempera or washable craft paint works well.

Can I print it on white paper?

Yes, but dark-colored cardstock creates a beautiful nighttime sky that makes the lightning bugs stand out.

Is this good for summer camp or classrooms?

Absolutely. It’s inexpensive, easy to prepare, and creates a keepsake children can take home.
