Copy Cat Cracker Barrel Fried Apples

Love Cracker Barrel's Fried Apples! Comfort food at it's finest!

If you’ve been on the blog before, you might know that I have a deep love for the south. And, along with that…a deep love for Cracker Barrel! My kids have no choice, but to love it along with me. So, when we were heading back from Wisconsin yesterday, and my husband pulled into Cracker Barrel…it was a happy day! We just love the home cookin’ taste and the Old Country Store! Waiting for a table isn’t a big deal there, when the kids can play with the toys, and mommy can peruse the fun gifts. Of course, when it’s time to eat, fried apples are usually on someone’s plate. Michael and I especially love them! As a matter of fact, Michael ate my fried apples along with his. I had no choice when we got home, but to make a Copy Cat of Cracker Barrel’s Fried Apples! I had no idea they used bacon grease in their recipe. Sounds southern enough. Here’s the recipe:

You’ll Need:

  • 6-8 medium tart apples – sliced into 8-10 slices per apple (Cracker Barrel leaves the peel on – you can peel them if you prefer)
  • 1/4 c. of bacon grease – that’s from about 3 strips of cooked  bacon (you can substitute butter)
  • 1 Tbsp. of lemon juice
  • 1/4 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. of ground cinnamon
  • 1 dash (about 1/8 tsp.) of nutmeg
  • 1 large skillet w/ lid

Instructions:

  • In your large skillet, over med/highe heat, add the bacon grease (or butter)
  • Spread the apple slices around the skillet
  • Add the lemon juice, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg
  • Bring everything to a boil, then reduce, cover and simmer for about 15 minutes.
  • Enjoy with or without vanilla ice cream! Yum!

I have to admit, this freaks me out a little. I rarely cook with bacon grease, and I lessen the amount of butter when I can. But, I lived in the south, and I know this is an authentic way of southern cooking. So…I went for it!

Get your big ole’ skillet out. Set the burner to med./high, and pour in your grease – or butter

Add your sliced apples

Add the lemon juice, salt, sugar, and spices. I found this cute measuring spoon set at Pier One Imports! It has measurements for a dash, a smidgen, a nip, and a pinch! I love it!

Cover and simmer until the apples are as tender as you want them

Scoop the apples into a bowl, and if you like add vanilla ice cream. Oh man, I wish I had some vanilla ice cream to go with mine. Luckily these apples are a cinch to prepare. I can have my re-do with ice cream…soon!
