A Snack Turkey Craft for Thanksgiving with Kids – Fill The Feathers With Treats!

This is a Thanksgiving craft that I made last year, and sorta kinda loved. This year, I improved the parts that made me only sorta kinda love it, and now I really truly love it! I was so excited to share this fun idea with you last Thanksgiving! I saw the idea on television, and I knew right away that I was doing it, and of course…sharing it with you all! The Snack Turkey! The idea was to pour snacks into card stock funnel (feathers). This year, I have made some changes to my old Snack Turkey, and I present to you the new and improved – Fun Snack Turkey Craft for Thanksgiving with Kids. Come on in and I’ll show you the original version – just in case you like that one better, and my new version for the kids:

How fun is this? A snack turkey! The kids can fill up on snacks from the card-stock feathers while you make the real turkey! - KidFriendlyThingsToDo.com   The only problem was that the card stock was sort of weak at the end that inserted into the turkey body. It was still really cute and fun, but I knew we could do better. So, I got to thinkin’, and rummaging through my craft cabinets. That’s when I saw the paper cups. Eurika! We’ve got this!

Here’s my updated turkey. I still had last year’s Snack Turkey tucked away in my Thanksgiving boxes, so I took him out and spruced him up. The kids love this guy! I filled the cups with popcorn, Goldfish, and a few cookies for a fun after dinner treat.

The part I really love is – no painting! The turkey gets it’s brown color from stockings! Just pull stockings over the dome, and ball, decorate…done! Love the shortcuts!

For this Snack Turkey, You’ll Need:

  • A 12 inch Styrofoam Dome – I found mine at Michael’s Craft Store
  • A 6 inch Styrofoam Ball
  • Brown stockings – Get an XL if you can
  • A wooden dowel – about 6 in. long
  • (About 5) Assorted Colorful paper or plastic cups for feathers and spoons for dishing out
  • Extra large Wiggle eyes
  • Orange paper beak
  • Red pipe cleaner about 2 inches long
  • Several Push pins
  • Warm glue gun with glue sticks
  • Scissors

  • Cut the waist band off of the top of your stockings, and pull the stockings over the dome
  • The belly section of the leggings is the part that will fit the dome
  • Once you’ve got enough to cover the dome, cut the extra parts of the leggings off to use later
  • Use push pins to secure it to the bottom, and pull seams together where needed – also use push pins to help secure, or glue
  • Cut about 8 inches off of the foot end of one of the stockings, and pull it over the 6 in. ball
  • Tie a knot to secure
  • Use the wooden skewer or dowel to attach the head to the body
  • Using the warm glue, decorate with eyes, beak, and gobble pieces
  • Using a warm glue gun, glue the bottom of the cups going across the back of the dome for turkey feathers
  • When you’re ready, fill the feathers with snacks like popcorn, goldfish, pretzels, etc…
