Patriotic Pool Noodle Wreath

I love breaking out the summer decor. Finally, we can celebrate warm days and fun summer get-togethers after a long winter. It’s time for DIY Flip-Flops, S’mores by the firepit, summer relay races in the backyard, and homemade watermelon ice cream. Let’s round all of this fun out with a welcoming patriotic wreath on the front door.

Have you seen how expensive wreaths are these days? I was just at Michael’s craft store looking at rag wreaths for over $60, and I thought I could do that.

I found almost all of the supplies at the Dollar Tree, which has come a very long way with the quality of their summer decorations. While at the Dollar Tree, I bought myself some patriotic wide ribbon and a metal patriotic sign and headed home to make my wreath. Back home, I added a pool noodle, some duct tape, and some cloth to make this DIY patriotic wreath.

Here are the Supplies You’ll Need for This Wreath

  • one pool noodle – During late spring and summer months, The Dollar Tree has a surplus of pool noodles. I used a leftover pool noodle from last summer, but I wish I had purchased a new one. I think it would be more firm than my used one
  • duct tape – any kind of duct tape should work. You’ll only use this to tape the ends of the pool noodle
  • 2 yards of fabric – 6 feet by 9 inches of fabric – I used polyester fabric that I had on hand. Mine matched the patriotic them being red fabric with white stars
  • nine yards of burlap ribbon – I found adorable patriotic burlap ribbon at The Dollar Tree. They are about 2&1/2 inches wide
  • waterproof fabric glue – This should be waterproof fabric glue like 3-in-1 craft glue or Fabri-Tac
  • Optional: Hanging Decoration. I found the cutest metal sign the says God Bless America under a vintage truck at The Dollar Tree

If you have more than one ribbon pattern, as I did, sort them into groups and alternate the ribbon patterns by tying them around the pool noodles. Do not form a complete knot. I did a half-knot – crossing the two ends and tucking one under and through the loop.

tying ribbon rags around a pool noodle wreath

Make sure the middle part of the tied rags are all in line, on the front of your wreath

If you have a hanging decoration like the one I purchased at The Dollar Tree, untie one of the rags wherever you’ve determined will be the center top of your wreath. Place the hanging rope over one of the ribbon ends and tie it back up so the decoration hangs from the center top of the wreath

Use a small scrap of ribbon to make a type of bracket to hang your wreath from on the back of your wreath

Expert Tips

Learn from my experience. Buy a new pool noodle. It will be firm and hold its shape better than a used one.

FAQs

What Kind of Glue is Best for Gluing Fabric?

I use a fabric glue called Fabr-Tac glue. It is tacky so it grips the fabric immediately and dries quickly

Where Can I find Pool Noodles for Making Wreaths?

Look in your local stores from late spring through summer to find pool noodles locally. Most stores, such as Wal-Mart, Target, Five and Below, and The Dollar Tree, carry pool noodles throughout the summer. You can also purchase them online.
