Classic Dirt Cups: An Easy Worms in Dirt Dessert for Kids

This post may contain affiliate links – please read my disclosure statement.

Our church serves dirt pudding every year at Vacation Bible School, and my kids always said that was their favorite day! Making dirt cups for kids brings back those memories, but this dessert is still a favorite with the older kids, too. My son’s girlfriend loves it so much that a couple of cups get set aside just for her.

I use plain chocolate pudding in many of my dirt cup desserts. For this version, whipped topping gives the filling a lighter, fluffier texture. I let the pudding thicken before gently folding it in, and I keep the Oreo crumbs separate to make distinct layers of pudding and cookie “dirt.”

These classic dirt cups are an easy, no-bake treat for birthday parties, Halloween, or a little fun at home. Kids can help assemble them, and you can make them ahead and save the gummy worms for the finishing touch.

  • Kids can help. Layering the crumbs and adding worms are the fun parts!

How to Make Dirt Cups

Step 1: Mix the pudding.
In a medium bowl, whisk the instant chocolate pudding mix with the cold milk until well combined.

Step 2: Let it thicken.
Let the pudding stand until thickened. This can take up to five minutes.

Step 3: Fold in the whipped topping.
Gently fold the thawed, cold whipped topping into the thickened pudding until combined.

Step 4: Crush the Oreos.
Crush the whole Oreo cookies, including the cream filling, in a blender. You can also put them in a sealed zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin.

Step 5: Build the layers.
Spoon some pudding mixture into each cup, followed by a layer of crushed Oreos. Repeat with another pudding layer and finish with Oreo crumbs to resemble dirt. Divide the filling and crumbs evenly among the cups.

Step 6: Add the worms.
Arrange gummy worms on the cookie dirt. If you’re making the cups ahead, wait until serving time to add them.

Step 7: Refrigerate until serving.
Keep the dirt cups refrigerated until you’re ready to enjoy them.

Dirt Cups vs. Dirt Cake: What’s the Difference?

Dirt cups are individual servings of pudding and crushed cookies, usually decorated with gummy worms. Dirt cake is often assembled in a larger dish or a flowerpot-style container and served by the scoop.

Recipes vary, and some dirt cake recipes include cream cheese. My dirt cups keep things simple with a fluffy chocolate pudding filling and separate Oreo layers.

Melissa’s Tips for the Best Oreo Dirt Pudding

  • Check the pudding label. Use instant chocolate pudding mix for this recipe. Cook-and-serve pudding needs a different preparation method.
  • Let the pudding thicken first. Give it time to set before folding in the whipped topping.
  • Keep the topping cold. Thaw it before starting, but keep it refrigerated until you need it.
  • Fold gently. Use a gentle folding motion to combine the filling.
  • Keep the cream filling. Crush the whole Oreo cookies—there’s no need to scrape out the centers.
  • Plan your layers. Save enough pudding and crumbs to repeat the layers and finish each cup with cookie dirt.
  • Use clear cups. The alternating layers are part of the fun of these Oreo dirt cups.
  • Save the worms for serving. When making gummy worm dirt cups ahead, keep the candy in its original container until you’re ready to decorate so it doesn’t harden in the refrigerator.

Dirt and Worms Party Ideas

These dirt cups are a fun dessert for:

  • Birthday parties
  • Bug-themed or camping parties
  • Halloween celebrations
  • Spring garden parties
  • Vacation Bible School
  • End-of-school celebrations

They’re also a nice little treat to have waiting after school. My son was excited to dig into these when he got home!

Make-Ahead and Storage Tips for Dirt Pudding

You can assemble the pudding and Oreo layers ahead and keep the cups covered in the refrigerator until serving.

I leave the gummy worms in their candy container and add them the day of serving. It’s an easy last-minute step, and it keeps the worms from hardening in the refrigerator.

The cookie layers soften as they sit. If you prefer a crunchier topping, you could reserve the final Oreo crumbs until serving, although I assembled my cups with all the cookie layers in place.
