I made this the night before Christmas morning, so it would be an easy breakfast for everyone on a very busy day. We left it out for everyone to enjoy all day, and it received several compliments. This cinnamon nut coffee cake ring was such a delicious treat to have and going forward, I’ll be adding it to my traditional holiday recipes.

How Do You Make a Coffee Ring?

  1. In a bowl, combine 2 cups of the  flour, sugar, yeast and salt.
  2. In a saucepan, heat milk, butter and water until luke-warm
  3. Add to dry ingredients; and beat just until moistened.
  4. Add egg and remaining flour; and beat until smooth.
  5. Shape into a ball. Do not knead. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a large rectangle – about 12x18in. –
  7. Spread filling to within 1/2 in. of edges
  8. Roll up, jelly-roll style, starting with a long side; pinch seam to seal
  9. place, seam side down, on a greased 12-in. pizza pan; pinch ends together to form a ring.
  10. With scissors, cut from outside edge two-thirds of the way toward center of the ring at 1-1/2-inch intervals
  11. Separate pieces; slightly spread apart to show filling
  12. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes
  13. After the dough has doubled in size, it’s either ready to bake, or if this is a night before deal, it’s ready to get covered and placed in the refrigerator
  14. Take it out early the next morning and let it warm up. (about 1/2 hour) or until the dough looks a little puffy
  15. Bake at 375° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  16. Let Cool
  17. For glaze, combine sugar, butter, vanilla and enough milk to achieve desired consistency. drizzle over coffee cake

This delicious coffee cake ring can be made the night before

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 egg

Filling

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Glaze

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons milk
