Use this handy trick of using a storage bag to make a piping bag to hold your frosting to frost cakes, cupcakes, and pastries.
How to Turn a Zip-Tight Bag into a Piping Bag
I love kitchen hacks like this one. They are always aimed at getting us out of a bind or as a shortcut to make a complicated recipe easy to do. Like this hack on preventing pasta water from boiling over, how to keep cilantro fresh, and how to get egg shells out of a bowl of eggs.
You have the tips and couplings but no bag to put the frosting in, and that cupcake or gingerbread house is staring at you. What do you do? Use a zip-lock slider bag. If you have several tips and couplers for frosting, then the kids can have their own piping bags full of frosting ready to decorate their yummy dessert.. It’s easy to do and makes for a lot of creative fun in the kitchen with kids.

How to Make a Piping Bag out of a Storage Bag
- Snip off a corner of the zip-lock bag
- Slide the larger portion of the plastic coupler into the bag – pushing the narrow tip through the hole you created.
- On the outside of the bag, slide a decorator’s tip over the narrow part of the plastic coupler.
- Twist the other portion of the plastic coupler over the tip, bag, and inside coupler
- Fold the bag outward
- Fill it with frosting
- Squeeze excess air out of the bag
- Seal the bag
- That’s IT – Have fun
