Easy Campfire Cupcakes for Kids

This post may contain affiliate links – please read my disclosure statement.

These Campfire Cupcakes are one of those treats that look complicated but are surprisingly easy to put together. With fluffy cupcakes topped with piped grass frosting, a graham cracker tent, a candy sleeping bag, a tiny campfire, and a toasted marshmallow detail, they make such a fun dessert for camping parties, summer celebrations, classroom camping themes, or backyard campouts.

The best part is that you can use any cupcake flavor underneath because all of the fun happens on top. I used vanilla cupcakes, but chocolate, funfetti, or boxed cupcakes work just as well.

If you’re looking for easy campfire-themed cupcakes or camping cupcakes for kids, this one is always a hit.

We’ve always loved making fun camping treats together, and these Campfire Cupcakes would pair perfectly with our Campfire Dirt Cups.

How to Make Campfire Cupcakes

Step 1

  • Bake and cool your cupcakes completely.
  • Frost the top of the cupcake with green frosting using a grass piping tip until the entire surface looks like grassy ground.

Step 2

  • Create the tent by breaking one Graham cracker sheet into two long rectangles. Pipe a little frosting along the top edge and press the pieces together into an upside-down V shape.
  • Place the graham cracker tent on top of the cupcake.
  • Cut a small rectangle from an Airheads Xtremes rainbow strip and tuck it inside the tent to create a sleeping bag.
  • Place a gummy bear inside or near the tent to finish your camping scene.

Step 3

  • Make the campfire by stacking mini pretzel sticks into a small pile near the front of the cupcake. Use frosting between layers to help hold everything together.
  • Add both yellow and red frosting to one piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe small flames over the pretzel logs. (Depending on the coloring used, red frosting may appear more pink once piped.)

Melissa’s Tips for Decorating Campfire Cupcakes

• Any cupcake flavor works because the decorations cover most of the top.

• I used natural food coloring for my frosting and noticed the red turned more pink or magenta once piped. If you want brighter campfire flames, traditional gel food coloring will usually give a truer red and orange color.

• Pipe the grass first and build the tent and campfire afterward so the decorations sit securely in the frosting.

• Make the graham cracker tent before decorating multiple cupcakes to speed things up.

How to Keep Frosting Grass and Flames Standing Upright

If your frosting starts drooping or won’t hold its shape, try chilling it first. Store-bought frosting is often softer than homemade and can flatten when piped.

For thicker frosting:

• Refrigerate frosting for 10–15 minutes before piping.
• Mix in 1–2 tablespoons of powdered sugar at a time until the frosting holds soft peaks.
• Use gel food coloring instead of liquid food coloring to avoid thinning the frosting.
• Pipe the grass first and refrigerate the cupcake for a few minutes before adding tents and campfire details.

Tip: If the frosting starts warming up while decorating, place the piping bag in the refrigerator for 5–10 minutes and continue decorating afterward.

FAQs about Campfire Cupcakes

Yes! Bake the cupcakes and prepare decorations ahead of time. Assemble the decorated cupcakes the same day for the best texture and to keep the graham cracker tent crisp.

A grass piping tip creates the grassy campsite look. If you don’t have one, you can spread green frosting and use a fork to add texture.

Store-bought frosting can be softer and may flatten after piping. Chill the frosting for 10–15 minutes or mix in a little powdered sugar to help it hold shape. Gel food coloring also works better than liquid coloring because it won’t thin the frosting.

Absolutely. Homemade buttercream usually pipes thicker and holds details well for the grass and campfire flames.

Fruit leather, fruit roll-ups, sour rainbow candy strips, or other flat chewy candies all work well.

Older kids can help assemble tents and decorate the campsite. Younger kids usually enjoy adding the sleeping bag, gummy bear, and marshmallow details.

Yes! These campfire cupcakes are great for camping birthdays, classroom camping themes, summer parties, scout gatherings, or backyard campouts.
