The Lorax Cupcake Dessert
We, as a family, are huge fans of Dr. Seuss. Throughout the years, I’ve made many crafts relating to Dr. Seuss and Dr. Seuss’s party ideas, like this Cat in the Hat Crayon Holder, Truffula Tree Pinwheels party favors, and a Dr. Seuss Party Game for school or birthday. These cupcakes are perfect for Dr. Seuss week at school or Read Across America week.
The Lorax is a Dr. Seuss book that is one of our favorites. We couldn’t wait to see The Lorax Movie when it came out. Everything in The Lorax’s world is so bright and magical until all the trees are cut down. Throughout the book, The Lorax teaches kids how important maintaining a healthy environment is until the beautiful scenery finally starts to come back to life. It is a great book on the importance of the environment and keeping it safe.
What You’ll Love about this Cupcake
- It is easy to make
- It’s not just a cupcake. The Lorax’s mustache is a chocolate lollipop – how fun!
- This dessert is perfect for any Dr. Seuss occasion.
Ingredients
Pre-baked and cooled cupcakes – I used a yellow cake mix to make them, but it doesn’t matter which type you use. It will get covered up with frosting.
Yellow Chocolate Candy Melts – I like to use Wilton or Sweet Tooth Fairy brands. Wilton can be found online, and Sweet Tooth Fairy can be found at Michael’s craft stores. I know they are good at melting and holding together. I have used off-brands, and they are not as reliable.
Candy Eyes with a Blue Iris – I found a container of fun candy eyes online with a blue iris, which is perfect for The Lorax.
White Frosting mixed with orange food coloring to make orange frosting
Equipment Needed
Medium glass microwave-proof bowl
Wax Paper
Silicone utensil for stirring
Mustache Popsicle Mold – You’ll want a mustache candy mold to pour the yellow chocolate melts into
Lollipop Sticks – you’ll cut these into thirds so they fit into the cupcake.
Toothpick
Piping Bag with a Grass Tip – the grass tip makes the frosting resemble fur. It’s a fun touch to this Dr. Seuss cupcake idea.
Instructions
Melt chocolate according to the package directions, or do what I do. I place it into a glass microwave-proof bowl and microwave it for one minute. I stir it until smooth. If needed, I microwave for 30 more seconds and stir until smooth.
Place wax paper down on your work surface
Spoon melted chocolate into mustache molds
Gently tap the molds onto the counter to release air pockets
Place your lollipop sticks which have been cut into thirds, into the mold partially over the mustache
Spoon a tiny amount of chocolate over the lollipop stick portion sitting on the yellow mustache. This will help to ensure the lollipop is glued in place
The mustaches are a thick amount of chocolate, so depending on the air temperature, the chocolate will set up in 15-30 minutes
Gently twist your mold, releasing the chocolate from the sides of the mustaches
Turn the molds around and let the mustaches release onto the wax paper. If necessary, give a little tap to release them
Make as many as you need for the amount of cupcakes you have
You should still have a little bit of chocolate in your bowl. Microwave that for 15-30 seconds
Use a toothpick to grab some melted chocolate and use it as glue to glue the eyes onto each mustache
Once your mustache has dried to the eyes, you can turn it around and add more melted chocolate to the back of the eyes for extra strength
Place your orange frosting in a piping bag fitted with a grass tip.
Squeeze a small amount of frosting onto the cupcake and lift straight up to get the look of grass or fur, which is what we are going for
When that has hardened, place your lollipop Lorax mustaches and eyes into the center of each cupcake.
Expert Tips and Tricks
Hold both sides of the mustache mold and twist the chocolate back and forth to release the chocolate from the mold. Carefully turn the mold over to release the chocolate. Give a gentle tap if necessary.
Do not overheat the chocolate. You’ll know that it is overheated if it starts to thicken up and will no longer pour. If that happens, add a minuscule amount of shortening. This may prolong the setting up process of the chocolate, and it may be a softer chocolate.
FAQs
It most likely overheated. Gradually heat the chocolate and stir often. Once the chocolate has melted and is smooth, you are done melting it.
Yes. I place it in the microwave for 10-30 seconds to re-melt my chocolate
Place your melted chocolate container into a hot water bath or over a saucepan with hot water. The hot water under your bowl will evaporate steam, keeping your bowl warm and your chocolate melted. Another method is to use a crockpot to keep the water warm. Place containers of melted chocolate. Into the bath of warm water. A word of warning, do not let the water and chocolate come into direct contact. This will harden your chocolate.
Make-Ahead and Storage
You can make these cupcakes several hours before your party. I would not make them a day in advance because storing the cupcakes will be hard to do
Store cupcakes at room temperature. If necessary, cover with an airtight container away from moisture.

“I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees.
I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues”
But if they did they would find this treat scrumptious I’m sure! =)
