Ingredients and Notes
- Milk Chocolate Melts—Milk Chocolate Color—I like to use a couple of chocolate melt brands: Wilton and Sweet Tooth Fairy. Chocolate bark is another great alternative.
- White chocolate melts—or White Frosting. What you choose is your personal preference. If you use chocolate melts, you’ll be guaranteed firm laces, but the chocolate can sometimes get air pockets and get clogged in the candy squeeze bottle, making the process a little more time-consuming. White frosting using a writing tip will make drawing the laces easier, but the frosting can slide off of the treat if the room is humid.
- Oreo Cookies – You’ll probably have some cookie casualties, so make sure you have an entire container of Oreo cookies to make this treat.
Equipment Needed
- Toothpicks
- Candy squeeze bottle – if using white chocolate for laces
- Piping bag with writing tip attached – if using white frosting for laces
How to Make Chocolate-Covered Oreo Footballs
Shape the Oreo Cookies by sawing the edges off the cookie, making it a diamond shape.
Curve the top and bottom edges using a sharp knife to resemble a football. If you want your football to stand up, you can make a straight edge at the bottom of the football.
Insert your toothpick into the football.
Dip each cookie into the chocolate melts and place them on wax paper
You can pop those into the freezer for a couple of minutes to set up or let them dry at room temperature
Detail with melted white chocolate in the candy squeeze bottle or white icing in a piping bag with a writing tip
Expert Tips
Melting Chocolate
Place candy melts in a microwave-proof tall glass bowl or mason jar and microwave them for 1 minute. Stir your warm chocolate, and place it back into the microwave for 30 more seconds.
Variation
Make these treats without shaping them into footballs. Do everything else the same. You’ll end up with round footballs, but it is a quicker and easier variation to shaping Oreos into footballs
FAQS
What is chocolate seizing?
Chocolate has been overheated or has come into contact with liquid, making it hard to work with
Chocolate Seizing
Seizing is what my mom used to call overheated chocolate or chocolate that was unworkable. She’d say, the chocolate seized. Which basically meant that it was thick and impossible to use.
Causes of chocolate seizing are typically overheating the chocolate or adding liquid to the chocolate.
There is a fine balance of heating and overheating chocolate. Once you overheat it, it turns thick and worthless.
There are tricks and tips to smooth the chocolate back out, but I don’t think it really ever fully recovers. You’ll basically want to add a form of lard in the way of vegetable shortening or coconut oil. Only use a tiny little speck. Add it to the chocolate and stir in.
