What You’ll Love about this Lorax Cupcake
- It is an easy cupcake to make
- The cupcakes are so much fun and so colorful – A big hit with the kids
- Perfect for a Lorax birthday party
Ingredients
- White Cake Mix – I used Super Moist Cake Mix from Betty Crocker.
- Vegetable Oil – I used 1/2 cup of vegetable oil because that is what the particular cake mix I purchased suggested on the back of the box. If you use another type of white cake mix, then your measurements might be different.
- Large Eggs – I used three eggs per the boxed cake mix suggestions. Be sure to double-check with your cake mix on the amount of eggs needed.
- Water – My cake mix recommended one cup of water. Again, check with your boxed mix and adjust this measurement if needed.
- Cotton Candy – I found the perfect cotton candy at my local Walmart. Try to find tubs of round cotton candy that are around the same colors that you would find in The Lorax book. I used orange, purple, and pink cotton candy.
- White Frosting – If you can find green frosting, then you can use that in place of the white frosting and green coloring
- Food Coloring – You’ll add this to the white frosting.
Extra Equipment
- Striped Paper Straws
- Grass Tip for Piping Bag
- Kitchen Scissors
How to Make Truffula Tree Cupcakes
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Mix the cake mix with oil, water, and eggs
Bake for 15-19 minutes, and let completely cool
Add a few drops of green food coloring to the white frosting and mix
Spoon the green frosting into a piping bag fitted with a grass tip
Use the grass tip to make grass-style frosting on the cupcake.
Do this by squeezing the frosting out to make long strings and pulling the tip straight up to release the grass frosting.
To make the truffula trees, cut a slice of cotton candy
Cut slits around the cotton candy to make it flow a little more around the edges
Cut the paper straws in half
Use a little frosting to glue the cotton candy to the straw – To do this, gently pull a cut piece apart and insert the frosted straw. Push the cotton candy around the straw.
Push the straw into the center of the cupcake.
Expert Tips
Cotton candy is very fragile. It will pull apart easily, so be gently when cutting it.
If you have one completely fall apart, use frosting as glue to glue it back together. If this does not work, use the tiniest drop of water to cement it together. Be careful with that strategy, becuase cotton candy melts in water
If you house is humid, then moisture will collect on the cotton candy, so it is best to wait until you are almost ready to serve the cupcakes before adding the cotton candy trees
FAQs
Find a grass piping tip to add to your piping bag. Fill your piping bag with green frosing. Squeeze frosting onto the dessert to make long strings, stop squeezing and pull the frosting tip straight up to release the grass frosing
Yes. For years, bakers have been adding food coloring to sweetened coconut flakes to resemble grass for Easter desserts and other sweet treats
Make Ahead and Storage
You can make this cupcake several hours before the party
Storing: Store uncovered on the counter
I do not recommend storing the cotton candy trees in an airtight container. Moisture will start to accumulate and the cotton candy will get wet. It will shrink and harden
