This recipe comes from an old family cookbook. As usual, I added lots of extra flavor to an old classic. This recipe is full of rich flavors that I think you’ll love.

This recipe only gets better with time. As it sits in the gravy, it soaks up more of the delicious flavor.

How do you Reheat Salisbury Steak?

Reheating: place Salisbury Steak and gravy in the oven and bake at 325 for about 30-40 minutes

Can You Freeze Salisbury Steak?

Yes! It’s a great candidate for freezing. Salisbury Steak can be frozen for 2-3 months.

Freezing: If you want to freeze your Salisbury Steak. Let the steaks cool. Transfer the whole meal to an aluminum pan for freezing. Double wrap the pan with aluminum foil on the top and freeze. When you’re ready to cook, you can let it thaw overnight in the fridge and bake at 325 for about 40 minutes or until heated through. If you are cooking from frozen beef patties, add additional cooking time and bake it for about 60 minutes or until warmed through.

Do I Have to Add the Mushrooms?

No! Not at all. If you hate mushrooms, then you can leave them out. It won’t impact the flavor, whatsoever.

I Don’t Have Beef Broth. What Can I Use in Place of Beef Broth?

No worries. If you find yourself without beef broth, you can mix 1 beef bouillon cub per 1 cup of water to produce beef broth. You can also use chicken or vegetable broth in place of beef broth.

What is the difference between Salisbury Steak and Hamburger Steak?

  • Salisbury steak is full of rich flavor and usually smothered in gravy. It is served alone or over mashed potatoes. Hamburger steak is usually only flavored with salt and pepper and served on bread.

  • Avoid a crumbling patty. Try to resist turning the hamburger patties before the time is up. If it does crumble, don’t worry – it will still be delicious
  • don’t overwork the patties. If you press the meat too much, it could make the meat tough

Ingredients:

Ground Beef – This recipe is meant to have tender meat, so try to find one that is lean and has very little fat. I prefer sirloin
Bread Crumbs – you’ll just need plain crumbs, so flavored bread crumbs are not necessary
Salt and pepper – Just table salt and ground black pepper are all you need
egg – use a large egg
Worcestershire sauce – This is to provide more flavor
Sliced onion and mushrooms – this is for the gravy
Beef broth – for extra flavor and moisture in the gravy
water mixed with cornstarch – This will thicken your gravy

How do you Make Salisbury Steak from Scratch?

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the beef, spices, egg, and Worcestershire sauce
  2. Shape them into 4 patties
  3. Cook the patties in a skillet on medium  heat for 5 minutes on each side
  4. If necessary, drain the grease
  5. Add onions, mushrooms, and broth
  6. Heat to boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for an additional 10 minutes
  7. Add a mixture of water and cornstarch to thicken the sauce – continue to cook until the gravy thickens

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • cup plain bread crumbs
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. ground pepper
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ½ tsp. mustard powder
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 1 6 oz. sliced mushrooms can – drained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 Tbsp. cold water
  • 2 tsp. cornstarch

Instructions
