Apple Hand Pies are a fun twist on the traditional apple pie. Using the shortcut of refrigerated pie crusts, these apple hand pies go together in a snap. Filled with spices like cinnamon and cloves, these apple pies are fall goodness in your hand.
Apple Hand Pies
This is the season for apple picking. If your kids are anything like mine, they pack their bags full of those juicy apples, and you are left with the task of figuring out what to do with all of them.
If you are looking for fall dessert recipes, then you might like Easy Apple Crisp, Oatmeal Apple Crisp, or Apple Butter
Back home, I had to figure out how to use our abundance of apples.
Of course, apple pie immediately comes to mind. So, why not with a fun twist like having your own individual hand pie?
After I made apple hand pies, I wrapped the pies in fall napkins, and we sat around the fire pit enjoying them on a beautiful fall afternoon. The kids loved having their own pies, and the adults loved the flavor. I think these handheld goodies would be great for fall gatherings, and parties.
How to Make Hand-Held Apple Pies
- Using a large bowl, coat apples, tossing them in lemon juice
- Over medium heat in a large skillet, melt the butter
- Add apples, and cook until tender for about 5 minutes
- Mix the brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and cloves together
- Add the spice mixture to the apples. Continue to cook for about 5 more minutes, or until mixture thickens, and apples look tender
- Remove the mixture from heat, and stir in the vanilla
- Remove the pie crusts from the tin liner, and place them on a lightly floured surface
- Add 1/4 of the mixture to the center of each one, and spread it out a little
- Fold the crust over so the edges meet together
- Fold the edges up and over to form a thick crust, and push in with your thumb along the edge
- Prick the top with a fork
- Transfer to a baking sheet
- Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown
- Mix the cinnamon and sugar together
- Brush the top of the pies with the melted butter, and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture
- Cool, and cut in half
- Wrap each one with a cloth napkin, and tie to make it easier to hold
