Here’s What You’ll Need to Play the Soda Can Roll Challenges
Supplies:
- Tape – you’ll want safe tape for your table or countertop surface. Make sure that when you peel it off, you don’t peel off the table finish
- Prizes – The most common prize is money in the form of dollar bills. My mom brought a 20-dollar bill, a 10-dollar bill, a 5-dollar bill, and a 1-dollar bill for the teens and adults to compete for. Of course, if you can afford more, then you’ll get people excited about competing. But, you can use your variety of money. You could also use food prizes like snacks or novelty prizes. Get creative and fit it into a budget that you are comfortable with
- A Long Flat Surface for Rolling the Can – We used our long dining room table, but I’ve seen this family game played on long kitchen islands. You could even use the floor, although people would have to squat down.
- A Soda Can – It doesn’t have to be soda, but it does have to be full and unopened. You want the weight of the liquid inside to help propel the can down the table.
How to Set up for the Soda Can Challenge Game
You’ll want to place strips of tape about 4 inches apart from each other in rows at one end of the table.
Place prizes inside the rows of tape – if it’s paper money, then you can place it in the center. If your prizes are bulkier, then set them off to the side but still within the row that will win that prize.
How to Play the Soda Can Challenge
(A printable card with supplies and rules can be found below)
Players should go to the opposite end of the table that prizes are on and place the soda can down on its’ side
They can then roll the can down the table so that it hopefully lands on the row matching the prize they are aiming for
Once they’ve had their turn or the number of turns you have allotted them, then it is time for someone else to have a turn at the prize
If the can rolls off of the table, then their turn is over
Rules for the Soda Can Roll Challenge – Classic Edition
Typically, the player gets one turn and takes the prize immediately as they win it
The can is not allowed to go past the row. It has to settle and stop inside the row to win that prize
Rules for the Soda Can Roll Challenge – Extended Edition
To extend the game longer and keep everyone’s interest in playing for prizes, try this method that we came up with for playing the soda can challenge game
Let everyone have three turns at the prizes. This can be one turn at a time or three turns at once
They can not pick up the prize they won just yet
Once everyone has had three chances to roll, then any ties for a prize will have to have a roll-off
If there aren’t any challengers that tied them for prizes, then the player that rolled to that prize wins it
Roll Off:
Roll off Version One – Players roll until one lands on the prize (in question). This can go on for a long time and get a little tedious, or a player gets lucky and rolls that prize again, immediately.
Roll off Version Two – the player with the longest roll without rolling off the table wins the prize. This is the fasteds method for rolling off for the prize
Expert Tips for playing this fun party game
- change the prizes up. Have some fun cash prizes, but also have rows with horrible “elephant gift” prizes
- make several rows of prizes for more fun and competition
Prize Variations for the Soda Can Challenge
Ideas for prizes besides money. You can alternate between money and other prizes or leave the money out altogether and just do fun prizes
These prizes should probably be set off to the side within the row so they don’t get in the way of rolling for them
- make a mystery prize – place a prize inside a lunch sack and then fold it up and staple it. This can be a jackpot prize or a bunch of junk. Nobody knows, and that is what makes this idea so much fun
- Add gag prizes like – a whoopie cushion or a plastic whistle.
- add holiday-related prizes – scented candles are always a great prize
- Scratch off (Lottery) cards for money
- Place a fun food item in one row, like a jar of pickles, a container of garlic powder, or a box of sour jellybeans
If you can, practice before the game starts. This will allow you to develop the exact pressure you want to roll the can at and develop a technique for how far to squat or bend over.
Instead of one strip of tape, add a few layers of tape to make the can harder to roll over. Put the biggest prize at the end of the table so there is a better chance of having the can roll off of the table.
No. Just have someone at the other end of the table roll the can back to the start position.
