I’ve always wanted to try this Coca-Cola Barbecue Sauce Recipe. Homemade sauce is always better than the store-bought sauce, and Coke is an ingredient that just sounds intriguing to me.

When do you add Barbecue Sauce to meat?

  • You should add BBQ sauce at the end of the cooking period -about 15-20 minutes before the meat is done

  • Ribs cook long and slow. The barbecue sauce can be applied for up to an hour before finishing the ribs. Apply sauce every 15 minutes to the ribs to add layers of sauce

  • Cover the sauce and store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic – sliced – or two tsp. of garlic powder
  • 1 medium yellow onion – chopped
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 8 oz. Coke
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp. white wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp. yellow mustard
  • 1 bay leaf
  • ¼ tsp. ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Saute the onion and garlic in olive oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Or, until the onions become translucent and tender
  • Add the ketchup, Coke, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and mustard
  • Crumble a bay leaf in your hands and add that to the sauce. Finally, add the pepper
  • Let the sauce come to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and let it simmer for about an hour – stirring occasionally
  • Let the sauce cool down, and transfer it to a blender or food processor
  • Grind the sauce so the bits of onion, garlic, and bay leaf is super fine
  • Transfer the sauce into jars for storing and pouring

Notes

To thin sauce that has become to thick – add chicken or beef broth until it the texture you are looking for
 
Storing: Homemade sauce can last up to 10 days, covered in the refrigerator
