You and the kids can make an easy-to-make dragon sock puppet for some fun imaginary play or as a Chinese New Year Craft.
Dragon Sock Puppet Craft
Making crafts with the kids is a great way to spend time together. This dragon craft is one that you can make and enjoy any time of the year, like this popsicle stick airplane, magnetic shapes craft, and making homemade finger paints
Kids love sock puppets, and a dragon’s body resembles a sock. This dragon sock puppet is easy and fun to make.
What You’ll Love about this Dragon Craft
- It encourages creativity – the more you can embellish your dragon, the better it will look
- This is a simple craft and a fun activity
Supplies Needed
Sock – I found a mismatched sock with colorful stripes that I thought was perfect. A polka-dot sock would be fun, too.
Googly Eyes – large
Foam Paper – any color to use for the mouth and forked tongue
White foam paper – for the teeth
Stiff felt or foam paper for the spikes – I used a stiff black felt
Glue – You can use fabric glue or a tacky craft glue that you like
Felt Sheets or Foam Sheets – Red and yellow for the fire coming out of the mouth
Large Pom-Poms – to go behind the eyes
Felt Paper – cut into teardrop-shaped for fun eye embellishments or use them as ears
Small pom-poms – for the nose
Instructions:
How to make a Dragon Sock Puppet
Cut an oval that is about 3 inches long for the mouth out of foam paper
Cut white teeth to go on the front and back of the mouth
Glue both on the underside of the sock so you have a mouth with teeth at the front and the back
Cut stiff felt, felt, or foam paper to make the spikes going down the dragon’s back and glue it to the top of the sock down the middle.
For the eyes, glue the googly eyes to the front of the large pom-poms and glue those to the top of the sock where the toes would go
Add the two smaller pom-poms in front of the eyes as nostrils
Glue the tear-drop pieces of felt to the back of the eyes so the pointed ends peak over the eyes
Make fire for the mouth out of your felt and foam. I made it look like a forked tongue, but you can add more cuts for flames. Use red as the base and make a smaller yellow to layer on top
More Ideas for Your Dragon Puppet
Add wings to the side of your sock puppet
Add gems as embellishments to the body
Make pointed ears out of felt
FAQs
I like to use Fabri-tac or the craft version of that called 3 In 1 tacky glue. They both instantly become tacky and dry clear
