Apple Pretzel Bites: Fun Fall Snack Ideas for Kids

This post may contain affiliate links – please read my disclosure statement.

These Apple Pretzel Bites have become one of my go-to fall snacks — though I’ll be honest, the Butter Snap pretzels I used for the base are the real problem. I could eat the entire bag before a single one makes it onto the tray.

These come together faster than they look like they should — the kind of treat that photographs like it took effort but really just takes patience and a working oven timer. Once you’ve made a batch, you’ll spot the glossy-vs-chalky cue from across the kitchen, and after that you’ll never second-guess when the candy melts are ready.

I made 16 of these, and between my teenagers — especially my teenage son — they were gone by bedtime. Buttery pretzel, sweet chocolate, salty stem, crunchy M&M — it’s a hard combination to leave alone.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Fall Snack

These apple pretzel bites are one of those fall snack ideas that looks impressive but takes almost no real effort.

  • Only 4 ingredients — pretzels, candy melts, pretzel sticks, and mini M&Ms
  • Ready in under 15 minutes, including oven time
  • No candy thermometer or piping bag required
  • Kid-friendly assembly — little hands can add the stems and leaves
  • Perfect for a crowd — easy to double or triple for parties

🥨 Square Pretzels vs. Pretzel Twists: Which Works Best?

🟧 Square Waffle Pretzels🥨 Pretzel Twists
🍎 Apple shapeRounder, cleaner “apple” look since the candy melt sits inside the square frameMore rustic/imperfect shape, candy melt sits on top of the twist holes
🌿 Stem placementEasy — flat surface at center to press the stem inSlightly trickier — stem has to balance on the twist’s curve
👶 Kid-friendlyVery — flat base makes it hard to knock the stem looseGood, but a bit more wobble while decorating
⭐ My pickThis is the version I’d make first — the flat top makes the assembly nearly foolproof for kids.Worth trying once you’ve got the basic method down.

How to Make Apple Pretzel Bites

Step 1: Prep the baking sheet. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the pretzel squares in a single layer.

Step 2: Add the candy melts. Place one red candy melt on top of each pretzel, positioned toward the bottom so there’s room at the top for the stem.

Step 3: Bake briefly. Bake at 300°F for about 3 minutes, just until the candy melts turn glossy and shiny instead of flat and chalky.

Step 4: Add the stem and leaf. While the candy is still warm and pliable, press a broken pretzel stick into the top for the stem, then add a mini green M&M beside it for the leaf.

Step 5: Let them set. Let the tray cool completely at room temperature so the stems and leaves hold in place.

Perfect Fall Snacks for Kids to Help Make

This is genuinely one of the easiest fall snacks for kids to help decorate, since there’s no cutting, mixing, or hot pans involved once the candy melts come out of the oven.

  • Let kids place the broken pieces of pretzel “stems” once the tray has cooled to warm-but-safe – OR you have transferred the pretzel bites to a different surface
  • Set out a small bowl of mini M&Ms so they can pick their own “leaf”
  • Line up a few extra pretzels for practice rounds — some will look wonky, and that’s part of the fun
  • Great for an after-school activity or a rainy-day fall project

Tips for the Best M&M Pretzel Bites

  • Watch the clock, not just the timer. Ovens vary — check at the 2:30 mark so the candy doesn’t overheat.
  • Work fast once they’re out. M&M pretzel bites set quickly once they leave the oven, so have your stems and M&Ms ready to go before baking.
  • Press gently. Pushing too hard on the stem can crack the candy shell underneath.
  • Space them out. Give each pretzel room on the tray so they don’t touch while the candy is still soft.

Melissa’s Tips for Easy Fall Snacks

  • My go-to shortcut: I keep a bag of Butter Snap pretzels on hand all fall specifically for this — the buttery flavor makes a real difference.
  • Batch it: I always make a double batch since they disappear fast at our house.
  • Make it a station: Set out “stems” and M&Ms in small bowls so everyone can build their own.
