Apple-Shaped Dipped Pretzels for Fall

There is something about apples that makes the transition back to school feel a little more fun. Apple orchard field trips were always a highlight when my kids were young, and I was lucky enough to go along on several of them. Now, apple-themed recipes like these dipped pretzels bring back those busy fall days while giving kids another fun way to enjoy the season.
When I tested these apple treats, I used mini pretzel twists dipped in red melting chocolate, then added brown and green M&Ms to create the stem and leaf. The salty crunch of the pretzel with the sweet chocolate is such a good combination. I also discovered that a fork makes moving the coated pretzels much easier, while a toothpick is perfect for cleaning the openings and refining the apple shape before the chocolate sets.
These chocolate-dipped pretzels are part snack and part edible activity. Kids can help decorate them for a classroom apple unit, an after-school project, or a fall party. They would also be a cute back-to-school treat or a fun snack to make after visiting an apple orchard together.

How I Melt Chocolate for Dipped Pretzels
After working with chocolate melts since I was young, I’ve found that a microwave-safe glass bowl consistently gives me a smoother, more even melt than a plastic bowl. For about 12 pretzel twists, I usually start with roughly one-third to one-half of a bag, depending on the size of the bowl and how heavily I plan to coat them.
Microwave the chocolate melts for one minute, then stir thoroughly with a silicone spatula. Sometimes the remaining pieces will dissolve completely as you stir. If the mixture is still lumpy, microwave it for another 30 seconds and stir again until smooth. Microwave strength and the age of the chocolate can affect the timing, so use the package directions as a guide and avoid continuing to heat chocolate that is already smooth.
Keep all moisture away from the bowl because even a small amount can cause the chocolate to seize. I place my silicone spatula on a sheet of wax paper between stirs. The wax paper catches the drips, keeps water away from the utensil, and makes cleanup much easier.
How to Make Dipped Apple Pretzels
Step 1: Prepare the Work Surface
Cover your work surface or a baking sheet with wax paper. Sort out the brown M&Ms and mini green M&Ms so they are ready to add while the chocolate is still soft.
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
Melt the red chocolate using my method above or according to the package directions. Stir until completely smooth.
Step 3: Coat the Pretzels
Place one mini pretzel twist into the melted chocolate. Turn it over with a fork until the entire pretzel is coated.

Step 4: Remove the Dipped Pretzel
Lift the pretzel out of the chocolate with a fork and allow the excess coating to drip back into the bowl. Scrape the bottom of the fork against the bowl.

Use a second fork to gently push the dipped pretzel from the fork onto the wax paper.

Step 5: Add the Apple Stem and Leaf
Before the chocolate sets, position one brown M&M at the top of the pretzel for the apple stem. Place a mini green M&M beside it to resemble a leaf.

Step 6: Clean Up the Apple Shape (if necessary)
Use a toothpick to remove extra chocolate, smooth uneven edges, and clear chocolate from the openings in the pretzel. Work while the coating is still soft.

Step 7: Let the Pretzels Set
Allow the apple pretzels to rest on the wax paper until the chocolate has completely hardened. Once set, gently lift them from the paper and serve.

Melissa’s Tips for Making Chocolate-Dipped Pretzels
- Have the brown and green M&Ms sorted and ready before dipping the pretzels.
- Decorate each pretzel while the red chocolate is still wet so the M&Ms stay attached.
- Use two forks: one to lift the pretzel and another to slide it onto the wax paper.
- Let excess chocolate drip into the bowl before placing the pretzel down. This helps prevent a thick puddle around the bottom.
- Scraping the bottom of the fork against the side of the bowl helps remove excess chocolate.
- Use a toothpick right away to clear the pretzel openings and reshape messy edges. Once the chocolate has set, carefully trim only thin pieces of excess coating.
- If the melting chocolate begins to thicken while you work, warm it again according to the package directions.
- Let the dipped pretzels harden completely before moving or storing them.
