Cheerio Apple Snack Bags: Fun Fall Snack Ideas

Of all the preschool snack ideas I’ve made, this little Cheerio apple might be one of the easiest. I love that something as simple as a bag of cereal can become such a cute fall snack for preschool, an apple-themed lesson, or an after-school surprise.
I only wish I had thought of this when my kids were in preschool and I was helping with their classroom parties. These would have been adorable to pass out at a fall celebration—and simple enough to prepare without adding another complicated project to an already busy party week.
From my years as a room parent, I learned that the best classroom snacks are individually portioned, easy to transport, and fun for the kids as soon as they see them. These apple snack bags check every one of those boxes, which is exactly the kind of idea I would have loved to bring into the classroom.

Supplies for These Apple Treats

You’ll need one set of supplies for each Cheerio apple snack bag. Adjust the quantity according to how many children you’re serving.
hERE’S wHAT yOU’LL NEED
| Ingredient or Supply | Purpose | Easy Substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Berry Cheerios | The pink and red cereal gives the snack its red-apple color. | Use Apple Jacks for a green apple or regular Cheerios for a yellow apple. |
| Clear sandwich bag | Holds the cereal while allowing its color to create the apple. | A clear treat bag of a similar size will also work. |
| Cinnamon stick | Creates the apple stem and adds a cozy fall touch. | Use a short brown paper straw if cinnamon sticks are unavailable. |
| Green pipe cleaner | Secures the bag and forms the apple leaves. | Green ribbon can be tied around the top, although it won’t hold the same leaf shape. |
| Clear tape | Holds the bottom corners behind the bag to create a rounder apple shape. | Any strong transparent tape will work. |
Equipment Needed
- Scissors
- Measuring cup or scoop – once you figure out how much you want in each bag. A measuring cup will make it go faster.
- Food-safe work surface
Because the cinnamon stick and pipe cleaner are decorative, they should be removed before giving the cereal to a young child.
How to Make Cheerio Apple Snack Bags
Step 1: Fill a clear sandwich bag with enough Berry Cheerios to create a full apple shape. You don’t need to measure—just eyeball the amount.

Step 2: Insert a cinnamon stick into the center of the cereal, leaving only a small portion inside the bag and most of the cinnamon stick extending above it to form the stem.
Step 3: Gather the plastic just above the Cheerios and twist it tightly with your hands. Pull the bag taut around the cereal and cinnamon-stick stem as you twist.
Step 4: Wrap the center of a green pipe cleaner tightly around the twisted portion of the bag to hold it closed.
Step 5: Bend each side of the pipe cleaner into a loop and twist the ends near the center to create two apple leaves.
Step 6: Pull both bottom corners of the bag up and toward the back. Secure them to the back of the bag with clear tape to give the apple a rounder appearance.

That’s it! I love how easy this little apple-shaped snack is to make. Enjoy.

Easy School Snack Ideas for Fall
If you’re looking for easy school snack ideas for fall, these apple-shaped cereal bags can be assembled ahead of time and transported without refrigeration. Make one for each child and carry them upright in a shallow box or basket so the cinnamon-stick stems and pipe-cleaner leaves keep their shape.
Before preparing snacks for school, check the classroom’s food and allergy policies. Keep the original cereal packaging available so the teacher or parents can review the ingredient and allergen information.
Serving These as Classroom Snacks
These individual bags make convenient classroom snacks for an apple unit, preschool fall party, or harvest celebration. They are already divided into individual portions, so teachers can distribute them without serving cereal from a shared container.
Remind children that the cinnamon stick and pipe-cleaner leaves are decorations and should not be eaten. For preschoolers, an adult should remove those pieces and open the bag before serving the cereal.
Melissa’s Tips for Cheerio Apple Snack Bags
- Eyeball the cereal amount. Add enough Cheerios to make the bag look full and apple-shaped while leaving plenty of room at the top for twisting.
- Keep most of the stem visible. Only a small portion of the cinnamon stick needs to extend into the bag. Leaving most of it above the cereal creates a more noticeable apple stem.
- Twist the bag tightly. Pulling the plastic taut around the Cheerios helps create a compact apple shape and keeps the cinnamon stick in place.
- Add the tape last. After securing the top, pull the bottom corners toward the back and tape them in place to round out the apple.
- Transport them upright. Arrange the finished apples in a shallow box or basket so the stems and pipe-cleaner leaves aren’t crushed.
Red, Green, and Yellow Apple Treats
You can change the cereal to create a colorful assortment of apple treats:
- Red apple: Use Berry Cheerios for the pinkish-red color shown here.
- Green apple: Try Apple Jacks for a fun green-apple variation.
- Yellow apple: Use regular Cheerios to resemble a Golden Delicious apple.
Note: These cereal substitutions are visual suggestions, so check each package for current ingredients and allergy information before serving.
