I’ve been making this sauce for years. My two middle kids get so excited when I make it.

I don’t think I’ve ever made it the same twice and I’ve definitely never written the recipe down. My add-ins always vary and so does the amount of garlic salt that I use because I never measure it.

This time, however, I wrote it down for you. I made it a couple of times, just to be sure.

I think I have the right balance of salt and garlic, but you can always adjust the amount of garlic salt to your taste.

  • Garlic Powder 
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Crushed Red Pepper
  • Ground Pepper
  • Sliced Green Onion

How do you make a Creamy White Sauce from scratch?

  1. In a saucepan, over medium heat
  2. Melt butter
  3. Add an equal amount of flour and mix in
  4. Add milk and seasonings
  5. Heat sauce until it thickens

  • 3 tbsp. butter unsalted
  • 3 tbsp. flour all-purpose
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp. garlic salt
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Parmesan Cheese 
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • Ground Pepper
  • Green onion slices 


  • Over medium heatmelt the butter
  • Add flour and wisk until smooth
  • Add milk and seasoning
  • Whisk again until the flour is fully dissolved into the milk
  • Continue to stir ocassionaly until thick


  • Serve as a dipping sauce with bread or over your favorite pasta
  • I even like to offer red and white sauce with ravioli. It’s delicious when mixed together 
  • Delicious over shrimp and pasta or chicken and pasta
