When I set out Halloween treats like this one I like to have lots of other fun Halloween foods on the counter like Halloween Dirt Cups, Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats, and Frankesntein Hot Chocolate Spoons. As you can see, I have loads of Halloween fun foods to share with you. Let’s get started with these Halloween Pretzels.

Halloween Pretzel Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 11 oz. chocolate melts (white) – I use a little extra white because you’ll need to make the mummy wrap after you dip pretzels in the white chocolate
  • 6 oz. chocoalte melts (green) – I used a pale green, but any color of green will do
  • 24 Pretzel Rods – Make sure you have extras in case there are some broken ones
  • 24 Candy eyes – two per mummy
  • 1 oz. Sliced Almonds – this will be used to make the witch fingernails

Equipment Needed

  • candy squeeze bottle – They sell these in most candy-making aisles, or you can find them online
  • wax paper
  • Mason jars – Mason jars should be able to withstand heat in the microwave
  • Oven mitts or towels – be sure to use oven mitts or towels to pick up the hot mason jars and transfer them

Mummies

  • Melt white chocolate melts. I poured my melts into a mason jar and microwaved it for one minute on high
  • Stir the chocolate until smooth
  • Dip the pretzels halfway into the white chocolate and spin it around until it is coated.

  • Pour the extra chocolate into a candy squeeze bottle
  • *if you do not have a squeeze bottle, you can also use a zip-tight bag and snip a corner to squeeze the chocolate out of
  • Add two candy eyes to the pretzels
  • In a back-and-forth zig-zag motion, squeeze more white chocolate onto the rod, making it look like a mummy.

Making Witch Fingers

  • Microwave green chocolate in a mason jar
  • Dip the pretzels halfway into the white chocolate and spin it around until it is coated.
  • Set them to dry on wax paper

  • Attach the almond nail to the tip of the chocolate-covered pretzel. Put extra pressure on the curved in so the melted chocolate pushes up around it.

  • Let the chocolate dry completely.
  • Use a sharp knife to make creases in the finger. Make a slicing motion across the top of the pretzel in two groups of three—one toward the finger and a little further behind where the knuckle would be.

Tips and Tricks

Make sure you use a kitchen towel or oven mitts to transfer hot mason jars to your work surface.

Melting Chocolate

Place candy melts in a microwave-proof tall glass bowl or mason jar and microwave them for 1 minute. Stir your warm chocolate, and place it back into the microwave for 30 more seconds.

Chocolate Seizing

Seizing is what my mom used to call overheated chocolate or chocolate that was unworkable. She’d say, the chocolate seized. Which basically meant that it was thick and impossible to use.

Causes of chocolate seizing are typically overheating the chocolate or adding liquid to the chocolate.

There is a fine balance of heating and overheating chocolate. Once you overheat it, it turns thick and worthless.

There are tricks and tips to smooth the chocolate back out, but I don’t think it really ever fully recovers. You’ll basically want to add a form of lard in the way of vegetable shortening or coconut oil. Only use a tiny little speck. Add it to the chocolate and stir in.

FAQs

Should I Store My Chocolate Pretzels in the Refrigerator?

No. The refrigerator will build up condensation on the chocolate, which will spot it. The chocolate will also have difficulty adjusting from cold to warm temperatures when removed from the fridge. An extreme change in temperature like that can cause sugar bloom.

Storing

Store pretzels for up to one week in an airtight container at room temperature
