Supplies You’ll Need for Making a Sombrero Hat
- A Paper Plate
- Scissors
- Plastic Solo cup or Hefty Cup – around 16 oz. – any colorful, tall, plastic cup should work for this craft
- Pom-Poms – 6-8 per hat
- A temp glue gun and glue sticks
- Hole punch
- Elastic cording – about 12 inches per hat
- Optional: If you plan on making a hat with the pom-poms dangling, you’ll need Ribbon or Yarn – about 6 ( 3-inch long) pieces for each hat
How to Make a Sombrero
- Using a pencil, pen, or maker, trace the outer edge of a solo cup in the middle of the plate.
- From the hole you traced on the plate, cut a smaller circle out of the middle, leaving a small border
- *the hole in the plate helps prevent the hat from sliding off of your head, but you do not want to make it so big that the cup slips through
- Glue the Solo cup upside down over the hole
For Dangling Pom-Poms
- Glue pom-poms onto one end of your 3-inch long pieces of ribbon
- Decorate the hat’s brim with ribbon and pom-poms by gluing them to the underside of the plate.
The Sombrero Hat Version with pom-poms glued to the top
- Glue around eight pom-poms directly to the top of the brim of the hat
Fastening a Chin Strap to the Sombrero Craft to Wear It
- Use a hole punch to make 2 tiny holes directly across from each other on either side of the rim
- Tie around a 9 in. piece of elastic cording on to help keep the hat nice and secure
- *you may need to adjust the length of the elastic cording for the kids. Older kids might need more slack

What size cups did you use for the paper plate sombrero?
I typically use anywhere from 16-18 oz. sized cups. I’ve used the classic Red Solo Cups and Hefty Cups. You really just want a somewhat tall, colorful plastic cup for this craft. I hope this helps. 🙂
