Sombrero Hat, Cinco De Mayo Craft…

Here’s What You’ll Need for the Sombrero Hat with hanging pom-poms (our favorite one)

- A Paper Plate
- Scissors
- Plastic Solo cup or Hefty Cup – around 16 oz. – any colorful, tall, plastic cup should work for this craft
- Ribbon or Yarn – about 6 ( 3-inch long) pieces for each hat
- Pom-Poms – 6-8 per hat
- A low temp glue gun and glue sticks
- Hole punch
- Elastic cording – about 12 inches per hat

Instructions for the Cinco De Mayo Craft…
Here’s a quick video to show you how we made these fun Sombrero hats –
- Trace the solo cup in the middle of the plate
- Using the circle as a guide – cut a smaller circumference than the one that you traced
- *the hole in the plate helps prevent the hat from sliding off of your head
- Glue the Solo cup upside down over the hole
- Glue pom-poms onto one end of your 3 inch long pieces of ribbon
- decorate the hat with ribbon and pom-poms by gluing them to the underside of the plate
- Use a hole punch to make 2 tiny holes directly across from each other on either side of the rim
- Tie around a 9 in. piece of elastic cording on to help keep the hat nice and secure
- *you may need to adjust the length of the elastic cording for the kids. Older kids might need more slack
The Sombrero Hat Version without decorations hanging beneath…

- Omit the decorations under the hat and glue the pom-poms directly to the top of the hat

What size cups did you use for the paper plate sombrero?
I typically use anywhere from 16-18 oz. sized cups. I’ve used the classic Red Solo Cups and Hefty Cups. You really just want a somewhat tall, colorful plastic cup for this craft. I hope this helps. 🙂
