Here’s What You’ll Need for the Human Ring Toss Game:
Supplies Needed
- 3 inflatable pool rings per team – our rings are called 36″, but they really only measure 31″x31″. The inside ring is about 16″. I bought 6 – (3 for each team of 2 teams)
Supply Variation for adults:
You could use a normal float ring size of 36 inches, a larger pool float that is made for adults, or for a really larger center ring – use hula hoops or pool noodles shaped into circles and taped to secure
Expert Tip

If rings will not fit around adult shoulders, then allow ringing the head and neck to count as a ring and let them remove it and set it down to make room for another pool tube

Instructions on How to Play Human Ring Toss:
Full instructions are in the printable below
- Pick your teams and divide the rings evenly between teams
- Decide on the distance away from the person to ring that’s challenging but “doable” – we settled on about 6 ft. away, but you can certainly adjust that distance to what works for you
- To ensure that there is no cheating – It might be a good idea to place a marker down for the person that you’re going to ring and for the people throwing rings to stand on or behind
- When you’re ready, teams should (simultaneously) start ringing their human
- If a player has been ringed around the head and neck, they can shimmy it down to their feet
- Once a player has used all 3 tubes, quickly add the points up, gather the tubes, and pass them to the next player to continue the game
- The first team to score 21 points, wins
What is allowed and not allowed in Human Ring Toss
- *The human has to stand on their mark but can bend at the waist and point arms up in the direction of the pool ring to make it easier to ring them – to make it more challenging for older kids and adults you can disregard this variation
How to Score the Human Ring Toss Game
- Rings count as 2 points for a full ring (I think that around the neck counts) and 1 point for a pool ring that is leaning on and touching the target/human
- The first team to get to 21 points wins
The tubes that we used for kids, and teens were 36-inch tubes with a 16-inch center ring. It is possible to find rings with a larger center ring, but they typically only go to about 17 inches wide.
A ring counts as 2 points and a ring that is a “leaner” leaning up against a person is worth 1 point. The team that gets to 21 points first wins.
Hula Hoops, or pool noodles shaped into circles and tape to secure
Variations for Human Ring Toss
*This would also make a fun Minute to Win it Game. Just see who can toss all 3 rings in less than a minute and ring their teammate with all 3 rings!
Or, you could always play tackle. My kids didn’t waste any time ringing themselves as a target while the other kids ran as fast as they could to knock them down. They played tackle for what seemed like forever.
Use hula hoops instead of pool floaties to ring people

~ Melissa – Kid Friendly Things To Do
What size rings were used?
The pool ring bag says 36″ pool ring. They really only measure 31″x 31″ and are for ages 9+.
The inner circle is about 16″ across. If you can find one with a slightly larger inner circle – maybe a 38″ ring, it would fit over the kids even better. With the 36″, the kids did some helping out in getting it over their waist. If you can’t no worries. The 16 inch inner circle fits over heads perfectly, and the kids can pull them down over their waist, from there.
I’m going to try this for our VBS this summer. Theme is Baptism and it might work to show being “covered with Rightousness” That might be a stretch but pretty fun to see if we can cover the kids with the rings!
I think that’s a perfect idea for this game. I Love It!
