Some of my favorite holiday decorations aren’t the ones I boughtโthey’re the tiny handprints my kids made over the years. Every Fourth of July, I love pulling out those little keepsakes and remembering just how quickly childhood passes. It’s amazing how something as simple as a painted hand can become one of the sweetest memories to save.
As a mom of four, I’ve learned that the best holiday crafts are the ones that are easy enough to make on a busy afternoon but meaningful enough to keep long after the celebration is over. If I can print one page, grab a little paint, and create a keepsake in just a few minutes, it’s a project I know other families, teachers, and daycare providers will enjoy too.
That’s exactly why I created this 4th of July Handprint Craft. This free printable gives kids a fun way to celebrate Independence Day while creating a patriotic keepsake they’ll be proud of. With just a few simple supplies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and elementary-aged kids can make a holiday memory that’s perfect for displaying every summer.

How to Make This 4th of July Handprint Craft
- Print the free handprint craft on white cardstock.
- Place a small heart-shaped foam sticker near the lower third of the blank space in the center of the printable. This will create the heart when the sticker is removed.
- Use a paintbrush or foam brush to apply a thin, even coat of washable acrylic paint to your child’s hand. Be sure to cover the palm and fingers without using too much paint.
- Carefully press the painted hand onto the center of the printable over the heart sticker.
- Lift the hand straight up to help keep the handprint crisp.
- While the paint is still slightly wet, gently peel away the foam heart sticker to reveal the white heart in the center of the handprint.
- Allow the paint to dry completely before displaying or storing your keepsake.
Tips for the Best Handprint
- Apply a thin coat of paint for sharper fingerprint details.
- Press each finger down gently before lifting the hand.
- Keep a damp wipe nearby for quick cleanup.
- If you’re making several with a classroom, have the printables ready before painting hands.
- Let the finished keepsake dry completely before stacking or framing.

FAQs
What kind of paint works best?
Washable acrylic craft paint gives the brightest colors while still washing off skin easily.
Can I use regular printer paper?
You can, but cardstock creates a sturdier keepsake that’s easier to frame or save.
Where should I place the heart sticker?
Place it slightly below the center of the blank area so it sits in the middle of the palm after the handprint is made.
At what ages is this craft best for?
This printable works well for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, elementary-aged children, classrooms, daycare, and summer camps.
Can I make this in different colors?
Absolutely! Either red or blue looks great, and you can even let kids choose their favorite patriotic color.
