Love Bug Valentine Cupcake
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and it’s time to start working on Valentine’s Day treats to share with you like these Love Bug Oreos, Cupid’s Arrow Fruit Snack, and Valentine’s Day Rice Krispies Treats Mice.
This little love bug cupcake is made from hearts, just in time for Valentine’s Day. At one point years ago, I found a bouquet of heart lollipops at Walmart for only $1.00 and used them to make this little heart caterpillar. This time, however, I ordered my Valentine Heart Lollipops online. I like having one larger lollipop for the head with a few mini pops for the body.

- Conversation Heart Candies – Heart candies for the ears
- Candy eyeballs
- Red melting chocolate
- Black gel frosting
- Optional: Heart sprinkles
Equipment
toothpick
glass microwave-proof bowl
wax paper
How to Make Love Bug Cupcakes
Melt the red chocolate
Set the larger lollipop down on the wax paper
Dip two sweetheart candies into the melted chocolate
Push them up against the top of the heart lollipop to make ears
Using your toothpick, pick up some melted chocolate and dab some on the back of the candy eyes
Set them onto the lollipop so the chocolate can harden
Make a smile with the gel frosting
Let the lollipop set on the counter so the chocolate and frosting can dry and harden.
Meanwhile, decorate your cupcake with white frosting in a piping bag with a star tip. You’ll want to squeeze frosting out of the tip, holding it vertically above the cupcake. Stop squeezing and lift up to make a point. Repeat that all over the cupcake.
Optional: sprinkle with heart sprinkles
Once the faces have completely dried, insert them into the cupcakes.
Add three more mini heart lollipops to the back of the cupcake as the love bug’s body
Expert Tips
In my experience, gel frosting tends to run if you do not let it dry completely. Keep the head flat on the counter until you think the gel has firmed up enough to avoid it running down.
Make Ahead and Storage
You can make this cupcake a few days in advance
