Handprint Angel Keepsake: A Christmas Angel Craft for Kids

This post may contain affiliate links – please read my disclosure statement.

After sharing this angel handprint craft on Facebook, followers asked me for a template—especially that sweet little face! I put together a printable with the face, dress, heart, and star so you can make your own.

I included a ready-colored face and a color-your-own option so children can match their own skin and hair. I printed the template and cut out the dress myself to check that it worked for the craft.

The size of those little hands makes a difference when choosing your background. A vertical page works for toddlers and preschoolers, while turning the paper sideways makes room for older children’s bigger handprints. Always add their name and the date—those are the details you’ll want when you pull out this keepsake later!

Why You’ll Love This Handprint Angel

  • A face they can personalize. Children can color the outline to match their own skin and hair.
  • Works for toddlers through age 7. Choose the background orientation to suit the size of their hands.
  • Two ways to make the dress. Print onto colored cardstock or trace the outline onto colored paper.
  • A keepsake to save. Add the child’s name and date to remember when those handprints were made.

What’s in the Angel Template

The Handprint Angel Template includes a pre-colored face and a color-your-own face outline, a dress outline, and a heart and star in both solid gold and outline versions. Use the ready-colored pieces or let children personalize the outlines.

How to Make an Angel Handprint Craft

Step 1: Print the template. Print the template on cardstock. Choose the pre-colored face or have your child color the face outline to match their own skin and hair.

Step 2: Prepare the dress and paper pieces. Print the template directly onto colored cardstock for the dress, or cut out the printed dress outline and trace it onto a different colored paper. Cut out the dress, chosen face, heart, and star.

Step 3: Make the handprint wings. Position the dark background paper vertically for smaller hands or horizontally for larger hands. Brush white washable kid-friendly acrylic paint onto your child’s hands, then press the handprints onto the background to form wings beside the dress area.

Step 4: Let the handprints dry. Allow the paint to dry before adding the paper pieces.

Step 5: Add the dress and face. Glue the dress between the handprint wings, then attach the face at the top of the dress.

Step 6: Add the halo and gold pieces. Cut and shape the gold pipe cleaner into a ring. Attach it above the head with tacky glue, then add the gold heart to the dress and the gold star to the background.

Step 7: Add the name and date. Write your child’s name and the date on the finished keepsake.

A Simple Sunday School Christmas Craft

Angels fit naturally into Christmas lessons, making this a sweet option for Sunday school Christmas crafts. Print a class set of templates so each child can choose a face and create their own keepsake.

If you’re planning Christmas crafts for kids, this project gives children room to personalize their angel while saving their handprints.

Melissa’s Tips for This Angel Craft

  • Turn the paper sideways for older kids. A horizontal background gives larger handprints more room.
  • Print the dress on colored cardstock or trace it. Use whichever of these methods works for your supplies.
  • Tacky glue for the pipe cleaner halo. Use it to attach the shaped halo above the angel’s head.
  • Let the handprints dry before adding pieces. Finish the painted wings before gluing on the dress and decorations.
  • Always add the name and date. Include these details before putting the keepsake away.

Angel Handprint Craft FAQs

What paint is best for handprint crafts?

For this project, I used white washable kid-friendly acrylic paint. The white handprints form the angel’s wings on the dark background paper.

Can toddlers make this angel craft?

Yes! Use a vertical background page for toddler-sized handprints. An adult should supervise and help with cutting and attaching the pieces.

Do I need colored cardstock?

No, colored cardstock isn’t required for the dress. Print the template on cardstock, then use the cut-out dress outline to trace onto colored paper.

How do you attach a pipe cleaner halo?

Cut and shape a gold pipe cleaner into a ring, then attach it above the angel’s head with tacky glue. Allow the glue to dry before handling the finished craft.
