I’ve been making this sauce for years. My two middle kids get so excited when I make it.
I don’t think I’ve ever made it the same twice and I’ve definitely never written the recipe down. My add-ins always vary and so does the amount of garlic salt that I use because I never measure it.
This time, however, I wrote it down for you. I made it a couple of times, just to be sure.
I think I have the right balance of salt and garlic, but you can always adjust the amount of garlic salt to your taste.

Basic White Sauce Recipe {Easy and Delicious}
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp. butter unsalted
- 3 tbsp. flour all-purpose
- 2 cups milk
- 1 tsp. garlic salt
- ½ tsp. garlic powder
Optional Add-Ins:
- Parmesan Cheese
- Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
- Ground Pepper
- Green onion slices
Instructions
- Over medium heatmelt the butter
- Add flour and wisk until smooth
- Add milk and seasoning
- Whisk again until the flour is fully dissolved into the milk
- Continue to stir ocassionaly until thick
Notes
- Serve as a dipping sauce with bread or over your favorite pasta
- I even like to offer red and white sauce with ravioli. It’s delicious when mixed together
