Kool-Aid Milkshake Recipe
I love the tangy flavor of this Kool-Aid milkshake. My kids say it tastes a little like sour patch kids. I think it’s not as sour as that, but it does have a tangy flavor. You can really taste the Kool-Aid flavoring coming through with every bite. Making milkshakes is easy. They’re usually a combination of ice cream and milk plus some flavoring, but sometimes they are too thick or too thin. This recipe, I believe, is just the right ratio of ice cream to milk, giving you a creamy, colorful, and fun milkshake that you can enjoy on a hot summer day.
Today, I’m excited to share this milkshake recipe with you so you can try it. If you love this milkshake recipe then you’ll probably love my other milkshake recipe like this tangy kiwi milkshake, or this chocolate chip vanilla milkshake recipe!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Vanilla Ice Cream – You can use vanilla bean or classic vanilla ice cream
- Kool-Aid Powder Packets – I like to layer the milkshake to make it even more fun, but that is entirely up to you. I have to say, tropical punch is my favorite flavor with my kids.
- Milk
Equipment Needed
You will need a blender for this recipe
Instructions
Layering (If you only plan on making one uniform color, then triple the amount of each ingredient and only blend once)
Place 1 cup of ice cream, 2 tbsp. Milk, and 1 tsp. Kool-Aid powder into the blender
Blend until smooth
Pour into the bottom of your dessert glass
Rinse the blender and repeat with the second color of Kool-Aid packet
Repeat until you have all of the colors you want in your fun summer milkshake
Garnish
garnish with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry
Expert Tip
If you plop the second and third layers onto the layers below them, the colored layers underneath will rise up and form around them, creating a cool tie-dye milkshake effect.
Use a clear glass to enjoy the fun layers you created
**Some things I learned with this shake:
- Yellow and Blue mixed to make a light green similar to the blue. So, if you want a true green, you’ll have to help it out with a bit of food coloring. (The kids were disappointed that green was not represented in my color layers. Can you believe any kid would walk into the room, see rainbow milkshakes before them, and complain?! Geez!)
- You’ll need to add some food colorant to the yellow color, as well.
Variations
Want this milkshake less sour? Add less kool-aid powder or add a sweetener like sugar or honey
Can’t find Ice Cream? Use frozen yogurt or sorbet

FAQs
Can I make a milkshake without a blender?
Yes! Make sure the ice cream is softened either by letting it sit out at room temperature for 10-15 minutes or microwave for 20 seconds. Place ice cream into a container with a lid. Add milk and softened fruit or flavoring. Mash it with a wooden spoon. Place the lid onto the container and shake it for about 15 seconds.
What is the best milk to use for a milkshake?
I like to use 2% milk, whole milk, or half and half for milkshakes. The higher the fat, the tastier and creamier the milkshake will be.
Storing
This recipe should be enjoyed right away so the ice cream does not melt
