Coffin Sandwiches

When we host a Halloween party, I love to serve Halloween favorites like spider web dip, pretzel witch fingers, and crescent roll witch hats.

Guests will be delighted to see a platter of coffin sandwiches alongside the rest of your Halloween recipes. Because they are so easy to make, you can have several kinds ready and waiting for your fun Halloween party to begin.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Coffin Sandwiches

Bread – I used white bread, but you can use marble rye or wheat. It’s your preference. Another option is to have a variety of breads and sandwich choices.

Filling – For recipe purposes, I used cheese and mayonnaise plus peanut butter and jelly but you can easily modify these sandwiches to satisfy your taste

Topping – I used pepperoni slices for the cheese sandwiches and jelly for the PB&J sandwiches

How to Make Coffin Sandwiches

For Cheese and Mayo Sandwiches

Set out two slices of bread. Spread mayonnaise on one slice and add cheese.

Cover with the remaining slice of bread

Turn the sandwich so it is vertical

Going at an outward vertical slant, push a knife into the sandwich making a clean cut

Slide over about 2 inches and make another vertical slant in the opposite direction.

Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Coffin Sandwich

To achieve a clean cut, use pressure from the knife. Push the knife from the top to the bottom of the sandwich with enough pressure that it cuts through. I used a butter knife and pushed it down hard enough into the sandwich to go through both pieces of bread and the filling.

If you use a sawing motion, the sandwich will not have a clean edge. The sawing motion will cause the bread to tear.

Quick Tip

Serve your sandwiches on a dark plate with chopped parsley or sprouts to represent grass

Flavor Variations

Egg Salad – Fill sandwiches with egg salad and place chives in the shape of a cross on top

Ham and Cheese – Add a slice of ham and some lettuce to the basic cheese and mayo sandwich for a heartier sandwich. Use cheese to make a cross.

Chicken Salad Sandwiches – Fill sandwiches with a delicious chicken salad. Top with a chive cross.

BLT – Make a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich topped with a bacon or tomato cross.

Recipe FAQs

Can You Make Coffin Sandwiches Ahead of Time?

Most sandwiches can be made a day in advance. If you are making egg salad or something with a sauce, you may want to hold off until the day of your party. Cover and refrigerate your sandwiches until you are ready to serve them.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these sandwiches alongside a bowl of chips. Consider serving slow cooker soup like chicken tortilla soup or beef fajita soup.

Pasta salads are always a good side to any sandwich like cold shrimp pasta salad, macaroni salad, classic ramen noodle salad, or Greek pasta salad.

Don’t forget desserts. It would be a great idea to have finger food desserts for finger sandwiches. Some great dessert options are strawberry cheesecake bites, mini monkey bread, mini Jell-O popcorn balls, or Mini cheesecake bites.
