This Mermaid Doll Craft is perfect for imaginative play. Kids can create their own unique mermaid dolls, complete with colorful cupcake wrapper tails.

Years ago, when my kids were little, I found a flower fairy craft in the Family Fun Craft Book, and thought it would be fun to make some variations from their great idea. With Peter Pan being a family favorite, we started with a mermaid. The girls loved playing with the mermaid dolls and they provided hours of creative pretend play.
Why you’ll love this craft
Supplies You’ll Need
- Wooden bead for the head
- Pipe Cleaner
- Friendship Bracelet String or something similar for the hair
- Sharpies – Pink and Black
- A Flower Petal Cupcake Wrapper for the tail
Equipment Needed
- Scissors
- Glue like tacky glue for crafts
How to Make this Mermaid Craft
- Cut a piece off of your pipe cleaner to use as arms – about 2 inches

- Cut a piece of colorful thread – about three ft. to use as hair
- Wrap the thread around your fingers – or an oblong object to make a long loop of thread

- With your long piece of pipe cleaner, center it around the thread loop. Twist the pipe cleaner around the thread to secure it
- Pull the pipe cleaner with the thread through the wooden bead.

- Cut in the center of the loop to let the hair flow down.
- Wrap the smaller piece of pipe cleaner just under the wooden bead and twist to secure it to make the arms

Making the tail
- Turn the cupcake wrapper upside down
- Push the long pipe cleaner through the center of the cupcake wrapper

- Pull it down through the wrapper to make legs, leaving some above the wrapper for the mermaid’s body
- Matching up the scallops, fold the cupcake wrapper in half and shape it into a tail
- Using glue, secure the pipe cleaner to the tip of the Cupcake Wrapper, where the body meets the tail.
Face
- Use the Sharpies to draw eyes, a smile, and little rosy cheeks on the bead to make the mermaid’s face

Expert Tips
If you can’t find a flower petal wrapper, then make a tail with paper. Simply cut a circle out of paper, fold it in half, and cut a heart shape to make a tail.
Variations
Color A Tail: Cut out a circle of white paper and color it with a design you want your mermaid tail to have. Fold the circle in half and cut a heart shape from the rounded edge of the circle. Use it in place of the cupcake wrapper
