During summer, the kids love to sample the fun summer drinks I make. Anything with a fun umbrella and a cherry on top is always a hit for kids and adults, like this delicious and easy-to-make five-ingredient mango smoothie. Of course, it’s not just tropical drinks that are fun for everyone. We love this Sonic copy-cat cherry limeade and Ocean ice cream float.

Why I Love This Fun Summer Drink

  • Easy: Of course easy-to-make drinks are always high up on my list of favorites. Nobody has time for complicated drinks.

Expert Tips

It is fine if the frozen strawberries do not grind up super fine. Small bits of frozen strawberry look great in this drink.

Variations

Add frozen bananas to the frozen strawberries to add even more sweet flavor.

Make the drink dairy-free by substituting coconut milk for the half-and-half.

What to Serve With

Just about any salty dish would pair well with a sweet mocktail like this lava flow. Some suggestions are:

How do I Make the Lava Effect in a Lava Flow Mocktail?

When pouring the cream over the strawberries, make sure you pour it quickly into the slush so the strawberry slush mixes in, making the strawberries splash up into the cream mixture. There will be a blending of ingredients, but it will still have a defining line of white and red. Do not stir the drink completely or you will end up with a pink drink.

Can I adjust the sweetness or tartness of a lava flow drink?

Yes. Adding ingredients like honey or bananas will lend a more sweet flavor to this drink. Adding flavors like frozen pineapple or mango to the frozen strawberries will make the drink more tart.

Storing

This drink should be served immediately so they don’t melt

If you have leftovers, store them in the refrigerator

Making Ahead

If you want to make this drink beforehand, store the frozen slush in the freezer and the cream mixture in the fridge. Pull the frozen strawberry slush out of the freezer before you are ready to serve drinks, and let it warm up so it is not a solid frozen brick of strawberry slush.

Once the strawberry slush has warmed up a little bit and can be stirred, you are ready to create your lava flow.

To make more, you can double the recipe

To serve a crowd of roughly seven people, you can crush an entire one-pound bag of frozen strawberries with 3/4 cup of water to make a slush. Pour that into a large pitcher and store it in a bucket of ice. Rinse the blender and make an entire blender of the cream mixture by mixing about 7 oz. Of cream, 14 oz. of coconut cream, and 14 oz. of pineapple juice. Pour into a pitcher and keep on ice. When ready, you or your guests can make lava flows by pouring the strawberry mixture one-third of the way up the glass and filling the rest with the cream mixture.
