Welcome spring with a nest full of eggs or a beautiful and colorful bird.
Supplies Needed
Spanish Moss – You can order Spanish moss online or buy it at most local craft stores.
A Small Bowl for the nest mold – The size can vary to fit your needs. Ten years ago, I used an ashtray that I found at the Dollar Store. This was over a decade ago, and I have no idea where it is. This time, I used an assortment of bowls from my kitchen cabinet. I wanted a mini nest for my Easter tree and larger nets for display.
Paper Mache Paste
- 1 Cup of bleached all-purpose flour
- 1-1/2 cups of water, cold or warm
- 1/2 Cup of white school glue
- Pinch of salt
Extra Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk Measuring cup
- Wax Paper
Instructions
Mix the paste ingredients until it forms a syrup-like texture
Place enough Spanish Moss in the bowl to cover the edges, and leave a cushioned bottom for the eggs
Try to push the center down to look like a bowl. Don’t worry if moss sticks up and out because you can trim that later.
Apply your Paper Mache paste to the Spanish Moss. Make sure you put enough on that it will go through the layers of moss – all the way to the bottom and sides of the bowl.
Press the paper mache paste into the Spanish moss
If it is too much, and the paste is sitting on the bottom of the bowl – gently invert the bowl to let the nest drop down onto any surface, clean out the paste, and set the moss nest back to dry.
Let dry for a day or two.
Trim any wild-looking moss off the top.
Add some cute little birds or eggs to your nest
Decorating Your Nest
Use green moss bits to add color to your bird nest
Add some small twigs to the nest
Variation

Place wax paper over the mold

Add more paste to the top of the moss and push it down to spread throughout the layers of moss
Let dry overnight
Pull the nest away from the bowl or cup, peel off the wax paper
Cut any stray moss with scissors
