DIY Party Poppers

These DIY Party Poppers are a simple craft that will pack a big punch of fun for the kids. When I need to entertain the kids at fun celebrations like New Years, I turn to fun New Year’s Eve Crafts like New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, Countdown to New Years Rice Krispies Treats, or Tissue Paper Party Banner to decorate the room.

From Target handing out poppers to poor souls waiting in the Thanksgiving night line to the beautiful Nutcrackers Poppers I saw at Marshall’s, poppers are calling out to me this year. Yesterday, I took the kids to the library and grabbed a few craft books, and there they were—poppers. I felt a little compelled to make some poppers.

I don’t know why I haven’t done these in years past. They are so simple, and the kids are excited to learn more candy awaits them. Here’s what I did to make these fun poppers for our New Year’s Eve at home with the kid’s celebration.

Supplies for Party Poppers

party poppers supplies
  • Cardboard tubes – I used toilet paper tubes from the bathroom
  • Tissue paper – You probably have this in your home already
  • Ribbon – Curling ribbon is fun, but use whatever ribbon you have on hand
  • Decorations – It’s always more fun to see festive party poppers, so use stickers or confetti to decorate them.
  • Clear tape
  • Confetti, candy, tiny toys, and other surprises to go inside the toilet paper tubes.

How to Make Toilet Paper Tube Party Poppers

Cut the toilet paper tube in half

Fold the tissue paper in half and cut a rectangular piece about four inches wider than the tube and tall enough to wrap around it. Yours might not be the same as mine because your cardboard roll might be a different size. Mine is 6 inches by 10 inches.

Place both halves of the toilet paper tube onto the center of the tissue paper

Roll the tissue paper around the tube

When you are ready to celebrate, hand them to the kids or kids at heart, and let them pull the poppers apart. It’s like a mini pinata in your hands and so much fun.

Tips for Making Party Poppers

I like to use a couple of layers of tissue paper, so it is a little trickier to pull apart and cover the tube inside.

In previous years I have decorated our party poppers with scenes from napkins or fancy wired ribbon

Tacky glue like Beacon 3-in-1 glue works best when gluing any part of this party popper

What Should I Use for Confetti?

You can always make your own confetti by using a hole punch and paper or by cutting up shredded gift bag filler. You can order some festive confetti like this fiesta confetti, or shiny star confetti

You can customize these party poppers for any occasion. Party poppers are great for birthday parties, the Fourth of July, and holiday parties.
